'03 1.8 TDCI Glow Plug light flashing and power loss.
Help,
I have had my Focus 1.8 TDCI (115ps) for about 2 years. When I first got it, it had 22000 on the clock, it now has 45000. It had a problem with black smoke pouring out of the exhaust when I put my foot down, EGR blanking plate solved that.
However now I have a problem where I will be driving along and it will lose power and the orange glow plug light will be flashing. Sometimes the engine cuts out altogether.
To fix it, I usually put it in neutral, turn the engine off, count to 5 and start it up again.
I do about 75 miles a day, and it happens maybe every other day? But it happens randomly, I can't seem to find a common cause that makes it happen.
I have taken it to a garage and they have given me 2 codes: P0251 and P1211. Then there's a massive list of what it could be... mostly faults to do with fuel, so I have had the fuel filter changed but that didn't solve anything. I haven't done too much else as I don't want to spend loads on it if I need to get rid of it.
Has anyone got any idea of what this could be? I have it booked in to a diesel specialist on the 28th, but would like to see if anyone could help before then
Thanks
JM
p.s. let me know if you need anymore information.

Hi JM.
I am experiencing the exact same problem. At this moment, my Focus is standing at a mechanic. It reached the point where it refused to start. The GP light just flashes. Engine sounds like one having timing problems.

They are the most common DTC for the TDCi.
It could be an injector(s) or pump that causing it.
Basically it's the actual fuel rail pressure not reaching the desired rail pressure and the ECU cutting the engine to protect the pump.
Mine turned out to be seals in the pump gone hard/flat which caused air ingress when cold. Still cost almost £800 to fix.
You need to take it to a Delphi specialist to sort (the ones with injector and pump test machines). Anywhere else will be a false economy.
