Default engine system warning light - glow plug?

Hi all

I have a 2006 tdci and have been suffering from a red light appearing associated with a loss of power. I had a friend read the code and it came back as low fuel pressure on the rail. After a further full diagnostic at a ford garage it is now reporting only glow plugs that need changing. Does this seem reasonable ? I wouldn't have thought that glow plugs would cause a loss of power when running?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Obviously could be either or both causing fault.

On the modern Fords, if the glow-plugs fail it causes engine to go into limp mode.

Have seen it a few times recently on Fusion/Fiesta TDCI, Focus/C-Max TDCI.

If it's a glo-plug circuit failure code coming up, I remove and bench-test the glo-plugs and replace as required.

Many thanks for that Gary. Would this cause the car to limp randomly throughout a journey ?

It could do... the last one I saw would only rev to 3k rpm, unless code was cleared.

If you have a fuel pressure error in there too, that could cause it as well.

Mine only revs to 3k when the light is on. They haven't told me about any other codes when I had the test done yesterday. I'll change the plugs and see how it goes. I'm guessing it's an easy swap ?

Not too bad unless it's the DW10 engine (2 litre)

1.8l

I'll order the parts and a suitable socket. Any clues about the required size ?

The small nuts for the wires are 7mm or 8mm and glo plugs req a deep 12mm socket

Default Glo-Plugs difficult to access

8mm, but unusually deep socket. Difficult to access. No: 1 almost impossible on my 2006 TDCI 1.6 Focus. Ford workshop did job for me but charged £400 labour.
Odd thing is that I knew the glo-plugs 2&3 were faulty - checked their wires from the fuse box - open circuit shown. But the warning light was not on.
Only when I had an intermittent fault with the gas-pedal sensor did the light come on and the motor went into limp. A local garage turned off the gas-pedal fault & confirmed the glo-plug fault (but could not turn it off). Then the motor ran OK.
Sounds like the management system computer program has got it's knickers in a twist.

We had the same problem on our 06 plate 1.8TDCI focus, right pain in the arse. Had a mind of it's own, engine system failiure light would come on at the start, then go off, then came back when it wanted too. I decided to try changing the glow plugs and the lead.

Couldn't beleive it, doing that resolved all the problems, no engine warning light and all seems to be running better than it has for a long time......

Then all of a sudden whilst driving down a dual carriage way at around 60 miles an hour, all power went from the engine, running very lumpy, managed to limp off the carraige way and park up. turned the engine off and waited a bit.

Fired it back up and everything back to normal, bit worried now as to when it's next going to mess about...... seriously thinking about flipping it for another car less technical.

Graham.

This is common failure. Easy fix, you have to loosen the egr cooler and move it awayt, to get Space. Have done this at work on 5-6 Focuses. But you can be unlucky and break a glowplug
