Default MPG Seems CRAZY

Hello People..

I have a focus 1.6 LX Auto Saloon 2001 and my MPG Seems very LOW ford state about 25 MPG around town and about 46 MPG on a run but I have only been around town so I don't know about fuel on a run.. But I had 3/4 of a tank and have done 153 miles and the fuel light as just come on this seems very low I work it out at 265 miles to a tank on a 55L Tank around town & about 500 miles on a run if the MPG is 25 town & 46 on a run..

Please help me out with your views I have been driving 4x4s
with 2.5TDI & 2.8TD AND THE FOCUS seems to drink more fuel

Thx

My old 1.6 focus used to average 280 miles on a tank before the light came on, that was a manual transmission though, autos might be a little heavier on the juice.

That's not the way to be calculating economy mate. What you may think you should get in 3/4 of a tank could be effected by so many different factors and will never be accurate. Also depending on your driving style and exactly how much of it is stop-start will effect mpg drastically. Also, don't believe any manufacturer claimed figures as they are always optimistic at best.

If you are only getting 200 miles to a full tank then yes it isn't being as efficient as it should. Lambda sensors as said above are common on these cars to become lazy and hence overfuel. When was it last serviced?

i agree its not right i get more than that to a tank in my cossie round town, im not sure what your mpg should be
an 02 sensor is a sensor fitted before and after your catalytic converter on the exhaust that measures the emmisions before and after the cat to firstly make sure the cat is working and secondly to ensure the correct air fuel mixture is used on your engine.
if one or both of these sensors fail your car will tend to run in a safety mode which richens the fuelling up causing you to use more petrol
by getting codes read i mean go to a garage where they will plug your car into a computer and see if there are any faults stored in its memory

It's got service stamps upto 88K I have only had the car a few weeks and it's got 102K.. What kind of garage can I go to for the codes to be read can it be DONE at somewhere like ATS.. If it was a fault would there not be a light on the dash..

What do you think I should get about town on a full tank .... Thx

Around town I would think you should be between 250-300miles to a tank approximately. Code readings are irrelevant if there are no codes and may tell you nothing at all. If it hasn't had the spark plug leads or coil pack changed in all its life then maybe it is worth changing those with a brand new set of spark plugs too and also a fuel filter if that hasn't been done. That should give you a good base to start from. I'd go to a garage that can read live data and check that lambda readings are ok and not under-performing.

Genuine ford for service items. You will find that they are often a similar price to aftermarket parts and with genuine you can guarantee the quality.

I bought a set of 4 spark plugs recently from Ford, they were 3 pound something each, Halfords wanted Ł20 for a set of 4.

Air filter, Oil filter, Oil (I recommend Millers XFS 5W-30), Spark Plugs, Fuel Filter.

That's a decent service oh and pollen filter if it hasn't been done in ages.

Spark plug leads and coil pack aren't service items but are known to degrade and fail especially at the mileage you are at.
