what is the correct viscosity ???

im about to go buy some mobil one, but i have no clue what one to get ??


i know there are better oils around but i have 3 days off from work and wanna get it done asap .

what is the correct mobil one oil i need ? for my rs turbo

If you are buying Mobil 1 it is the Motorsport one you want (15-50)

i thought fully synth would be too thin for an old turbo engine?

I am changing mine to duckhams qxr semi, might help with the tapping too

That's why you use the 15-50 and not the 0-40 stuff.

my cars got a new engine, only done 1800 miles, the car itself is old, but the engine is quite new , so ill do what oranoco has suggested

seems to be good stuff my old engine was still running well at 180'000 miles with it and am running my new one with it to

Think i might stock up in summer tho, as you can get it quite cheap at the shows and have had to change it twice in the last 4000 miles

Mineral and Semi is not as good as fully. The only reason to buy semi is to save money.

I've used both 15-50 and 0-40 Mobil 1 in my engine and have'nt noticed any difference.Always changed the oil at 3,000 miles or once a year now ,as its trackdays only with the car now.Regards Micky

Im using 5-50 Mobile 1, Porshe std (semi synt.). Its a verry good oil if you got a heavy foot, and its allso recomended by Mobil 1.

I really can't be arsed with a lecture on oils, what their purpose is, and how they work.... We've got our resident Oil salesman for that....

If you want the best oil for your RST: In the winter, if u do a lot of cold starts, a thin fully synthetic is v good, such as mobil 0W 40. It gives better cold start protection than the thicker oils. Mobil 15W 50 motorsport, Valvoilie racing 5W 50, and my personal favourite, Millers CFS 10W60 are all excellent oils.

Lets start by looking at the correct oil to use instead of opinions, we can debate the brand once the correct viscosity is determined!

What year and model is the car and is it modded?

Do you do track days or is it a road car?

do around 800 miles per month i think.

its a rebuilt 1600 escort turbo with low comp pistons stg 3 head t3 hybrid , running only 17 psi boost as its my daily driveronce its been back on the rollers and set up for a bit more power and higher revs, then i will come see you , but as the stuff i had in there was poo and old i just used the 15/50 as a quick fix, in january i think ill be ok to get her set up and then change the oil again

the cars only done 1500 miles also , i wish you had spoke sooner, lol

i would guess it depends in what application ? ie , car , level of tuning, driving style .

You would not beleive the intricasies of this subject. For instance, the "10W" of a 10W 50 has a different viscostity to the "10W" of a 10W 60.

In practice, with modern oils it is difficult to really get it wrong.

My (educated ) opinion:

Lots of cold start winter driving - 0W 40.

General all purpose - 5W 40/10W 50

Hard use, not too many cold starts, especially for engines with large clearances, 10W 60 (millers CFS is the best i have found)

Im sorry but a 10w is a 10w and it has to be no more than a certain viscosity at -30degC (6600cp).

What is different is that a 40, 50 or 60 is a different viscosity measured at 100degC.

5w is better than 10w for cold start etc.

The "w" number is measured differently to the sae number (second/larger one).

0w is fine but slightly overkill in UK climate.
