Default Help! S2 rs turbo knocking..(pinkin)

Hello.

I am writing from Finland and i have big problem with S2 rs turbo.
First, here is the picture of the car..

It is 1988 mercury grey s2.

I drove 0.5 years car with no problems, it works fine all up to 15 psi.. no knocking, then in spring i test 17 psi, or 1.2 bar boost what ever it is, but 1.2 bar about, then car knocks and i broke one piston and cylinder head gasket..

Pics:

Then i total rebuild the engine, new mahle pistons, new kent cams cvh 31 camshaft and hydraulic followers, new bearings and all clean up..

New setup was:

Cvh 31 camshaft
amw larger intercooler
some chip in ecu (boost limiter cut off at 15 psi)
Larger exhaust
-34 actuator
High pressure oilpump
Garret T03 hybrid wit AR 48 exhaust housing and bigger compressor wheel..

And now the problem that car knocks really easy, at 0.7 bar (12 psi boost) standard timing advance it knocks.
My ignition advance is set 12° and the car works suberb but the knocking.

I broke that new engine , piston rings was crack.
I think that system knocks, i once hear that knockin..

I have video, if u want to watch.. in that video car knocks really hard at 10 sec.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/sambe00/rsturbo/nakuttaa.avi

You need XVID codec to watch..

Conclusion:

I have changed spark plugs, distributor, ke-jetronic all parts.
My A/F ratio meter shows green even in full throttle and 0.7 boost when it knocks..

Now the car has new injectors and it will go in AMW dyno for setup, and should know then is the problem with fuel or ignition..

Any ideas will be welcome..?

I dont want to BANG fourth engine

The engine bay:

It could be a number of things mate, you say knocking, do u mean engine knocking, you say you have changed all these parts but from what you describe it sounds like a bottom end knock?

From watching your vid, I can hear some noise at about the 10 second mark like you mention (although with other noise it is difficult to make out) it sounds more like a clicking than knocking. who rebuilt the engine last? No engine should knock after a rebuild if it was done properely and run in again properly

Thanks adam

My mate build that engine, and he works heavyweight truck service and repairs engines in work..

And i think he know what he do..

But this problem is pretty weird, and expensive to find.

No worries mate. I wasn't questioning your mates rebuild, just seems strange if the bottom end is knocking already. Unfortunately the world of the RS is always exspensive my friend and fault finding is a pain in the arse!

Yep i think that term what i mean is pinking.
And the car was pinking since i raise boost to 0.5 - 0.7 bar..

crank is regrounded and new connecting rod bearings.

Though't it sounded more like pinkin

I have done 500 miles about with new engine..
from your video if you are drivin like that after 500 miles off a new engine build it is no wonder you are ahving problems! As above, change the oil, get it to a tuner and run it in gently for another 500 miles before you give it some!

Hello, i got my car back from motor-car repair shop yesterday..

mechanican said that my igntion timing advance was 17° and it should be 12°.. i think that is the reason for pinkin.

Strange thing is that i make mark in distributor when i adjust ignition advance..

Now i have new injectors also

Next week i will go in dynorun and tuner..

Car runs now pretty fine

The vacum hose that goes to the ECU - best not to use any take off's on that hose as if their is a leak it'll throw the ECU readings out.....
use the vacum hose that goes to the breather on the other side or better still tap a new vacum on the plenum (pain in the arse cos its a plenum off job tho
