Hot running S2

Hot running S2
Alright guys,
I was hoping someone could possibly help me with this.
I own a 1990 S2 RST which has been fine up until recently. I have had the car about 10 months and had no real problems with it at all. It has a K&N panel filter and full stainless system but no other engine mods. During the mad hot weather we had this summer the car started to run really hot (I put it down to the weather, but obiously cheked the water, etc.)
Now the weather has well and truely gone, but the car is still doing it. Its fine if you are actually driving, sits about half way up the gauge, but in traffic it goes right up to the red, and sometimes into it, in which case I turn her off and wait for a bit, very annoying. I have changed the thermostat, had the fan switched replaced, had a head check (this is ok, at the moment anyway) and she is not losing any water either.
Is it just a case of now going to a speialist or does anyone have any ideas?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
James.

could be general wear and tear on the engine, fueling not right, header tank knackered, fans not coming in at right temp, etc...
ive got a modified RS Turbo mine runs at 1/4 temp general driving and goes up to half way in traffic, the fans kick in and bring it back down to a 1/4, mines running great at the minute with the lower temp drops, barely 1/4 on the guage when driving!

Cheers for the reply, lovely lookin motor by the way!
It shouldn't be general wear and tear on the engine as a brand new engine was fitted about 7000 miles ago, a month or two before I brought it.
How would I get the fans sorted/looked at, is it something I could do or would a garage be the best place? Also, the header tank, is there any way of checking wether that is knacked or not? Sorry for all the questions but I have a lot to learn about turbos!
I think this is one of those buggin problems that has a million and one possibilites. I think my best best would be to take it down to Power Engineering and see what they say. I just wanted to rule out certain things before I went there, and was hoping it was something I could sort.

I gather your runing the standard rad and fan, can u hear the fan come in? mine comes in at half way, easy way to check is to drive it about for 5 mins park it up leave it running, and make sure the fan comes on and check the guage, also check that the fans working, i.e. droping the temp of the car! you could always fit a lower thermostat 82c one! that would make the fan kick in earlier!
The header tank could be hairline cracked, unbolt it and have a look underneath, I noticed the temp drop when i fitted my baileys header tank! also have you got the right water anti freeze mix?
hows the engine running? was the head skimed at all, could be to much compression casuing it to get hot! wot kinda boost u running?
or could be a dodgy sender on the temp guage just winding u up! or the wrong sender! should be a pinky strip round it! just pop the sender wire off and have a ganders, if its black/red/green then its the wrong one!
I wouldnt pay a garage to have a look at it, coz generally they have your pants down! but im not a garage man, i get people I know to sort mine if i have any major probs!
hope that gives u a few ideas!

i think with the rs2 we all tend to miss the obvious, the heat from the turbo is a very significant part of the heat generated around the radiator, ive got a mate doing me a heat shield and i hope to see a big drop in temperature on the gauge,i pulled over the other day to check to see if my fan was working ok and looked down to the turbo and the fookin thing was cherry red, this is normal when you,ve been caning the fookin thing and it takes a lomg time for the heat to dissapate when you slow down and take it easy for a while, plus i was told that thers only 10 degrees diffrence between half way and on the red on st2 so the gauge is,nt hat accurate anyway,p,s. check the bypass hose from the thermostat housing to the expansion bottle remove the cap and rev the engine it should flow on throttle, hope this helps you m8.

CCould be a blocked rad. And you want to get a switch for your fan. I have on mine, and now my temps never go more than 1/4 way up! The bollox.
Also, as Lamar says: check everything over. You need to get a compression test done, also check the temp guage sender aint fucked, mine was loose and the plug had burnt away so had to fit a new one as it was giving me dodgy readings. Also, remove your thermostat!
