Actuator Confusion??? Help....
On my last power run he said alls good bar the actuator, its a little weak a -31 will see u reach better performance figures. Nice one i thought so ive just bought one as my S2 is nearly ready for the road again . I was reading that u have to adjust them to get better boost figures , how on earth do u do this because the rod holds the wastegate shut when the engines turned off and the boost pressure opens it up when driving and im realy struggling on seeing how u can adjust it when it on the car...so im a little scared of fitting it at the moment untill i have better knowledge of how u should go about it...
Please help me understand all the theorys ive read cos im well baffled now
cheers,

you take the metal pin/clip out, and slid the actuator rod off the wastegate...
adjust the thread etc... and then stretch it back over the wastegate stump...
when cold obviously

You shorten the length of the rod to increase boost. I set mine to lift at 11psi and adjusted it on the amal valve to peak 16 and hold 14 and set the fueling up at the same time...
Do not increase the boost without having the fueling checked at the same time...

A lot depends wether your car is on a standard computer or not.
For a standard RST a -18 actuator is fine (standard Cosworth actuator).
It is using a stronger spring then the std Escort item and will hold boost better.
The ignition for my S1 is cut off at about 8 PSI, so a -31 actuator is of no use.
I would end in the cut off all the time when trying to get the boost higher.
If you have the later RST ECU, it allows higher boost,
somewhere between 10-14 PSI.
Then a -31 atuator could be an option, although a std Cos item would do the job.
Please check wether your fuelling matches the increased boost.
About the setup: this really is a trial and error matter.
When the ignition is cut off, you went too far.
The standard test for turbo pressure (from the workshop manual!):
drive in 4th at 1500 rpm, floor the throttle until you reach 3500 rpm,
keep full throttle and brake hard with your left foot, read the boost gauge.
Max time do do this is 5 secs.
An open en deserted road might come in handy....
All this applies to a standard computer, modified items need tuners to set them up!
Cheers
