Lots of difference between the 2 cars mate it depends what you want!
Styling, engine, interior, there all different in one way or the other.
If you want a cheap RS to run about in and mod in due course then a Series 2 is for you, however if you want a timeless classic with heritage and class then its gotta be the Series 1, do be prepared to spend upwards of 3k for a decent one tho, as i'm finding out right now!
You'll probably pick up a cheap S2 that needs tidying and has probably been welded in the past for as little as 1500 quid tho mate, but remember - You get what you pay for!

Totally agree with Dan. There's nowt wrong with the S2 at all, but the cars are totally different beasts. First of all there are of course more S2's available, and you can get serious power from them for not a lot of money. They are fast and reliable.
The S1's are more of a classic - limited numbers on production (as basically it came along at the end of the MK3 Escort lifespan) meaning even fewer on the road today. Much harder to find a nice example of an S1 than an S2 (as Dan and others are finding out).
Modifying an S2 seems to be the norm, whilst having a standard S1 seems to be preferred.
All down to which you like. I've had a love affair with the S1 since I was a teenager back in the 80's. Of course back then I could never afford one. I have owned a S2 - a 1989 "G" plater, and it was devilishly fast, but I always wanted an S1 and therefore sold on the S2 pretty quickly.
Go for whichever you prefer mate.

The good ones are seriously dwindling. There's a lot of 1500 quid dogs out there - basically they are rust buckets and the parts are virtually impossible to pick up to restore them...
Ford basically have discontinued the spares - especially parts such as bodykits, parcel shelves etc etc so you are right to say that a lot are being broken to accomodate the mint cars.
There was an article recently stating there were less than 500 running on the roads with a high proportion of those being absolute dogs....

Also depends on wot cash ya got. Ya can get a nice S2 for 1.5k ish but a dog of an S1 for that. Nice S1's are upwards of 3k but the site of people walkin into lamp posts lookin at the car is priceless ! All down to you mate but S1 for me.
If you go for the S1 take your time and go for a nice one. It's easy to be swayed when you think a certain car could be yours. Climb all over it as there are some nasties out there which look ok. I know Kieron was like me and really wanted one but held out for the rite one and i'm sure his smile is as big as mine when he opens the garage door !
