As above fellas, which fuel Ron octane do you use?

I know a guy in the area he just uses normal unleaded 95 Ron in his modded RST, I've been using Esso 97 Ron super unleaded which it was last tuned up on.
I used vpower once cause it was close by recently and car seem quicker.

Was thinking of switching to tesco momemtum 99 Ron with club card points over the Shell Vpower 99?

i'd stick with v power, my mate works at grangemouth oil refinery and he says the tankers are filled with fuel and additives etc but on the supermarket fuel only fuel goes in. all the extras are left out to keep it cheap ,although this may be different for momentum.

Ok so you suggest vpower, need to see if anyone uses tesco momentum over shell. I've done 5k miles on the Esso stuff it's 97 Ron

Was a program on tv begging of year on fuels and best were shell v power and tesco 99 had same results cleaner fuel I use either

What ever your car was mapped on... the RON or octane rating refers to the fuel's resistance to detonation.

use at the very least super unleaded

If you can afford to then use some of the more performance based fuels

If you were to compare like for like it would have to be in laboratory type conditions really because changes in anything can give a different reading on a different sensor

I only used to use v power in my rst! Whenever I had to put 95 Ron in, it used to feel like the ignition had been backed off.( felt like it was holding back )

That was on 5th Gear I think.

They also tried octane boosters which ended up giving worse performance when added.

I've always been using tesco momemtum 99 Ron in my rs for years.

i swore by Tesco super shyte, lived right next to a tesco station so used it for ages,

began having "air leak" symptons with my 2.2 20vT engine, running lean, EGT right up into the 700`s when cruising at 70mph etc,

went to Derby on a training course and it got so bad with EGT`s nearly 800deg C!!
while i was there we smoke tested the inlet/breather and both intercoolers etc

no problems,

Live data all fine

so thaught nothing of it, on the return journey i used Vpower, and it solved the issue!
as in the second it started up from idle at the fuel station

Would never use Tesco again, ever in any car.

Also Esso is the same stuff as Vpower if you didnt know, same mother company and supplier (it isnt actually shell.....!)

Nitro Plus (ex V-power) in the V8 which knows what to do with it.
(Occasionally Tesco Momentum which works fine)
Bog-standard 95RON in the Focus.

Never had any issues on my old tuned VR6 and ex's Revo'd 280hp Edition 30 Golf mk5 on Tesco 99. Always low Cf (knock correction factors)

VPower isn't always great....

Long story short, guy was racing a Seat ex touring car at Silverstone Birkett 6hr race recently.
On way to testing on the Friday filled up his cans with Vpower, got to circuit, car wouldn't run, lots of diagnosing,fault finding, parts swapping, then someone realised it had DIESEL in it. They sorted that, then when they ran the car the next day the oil had been diluted with trying to run it on diesel - and shagged the engine (hand built Seat-Sport of Spain job)

So naturally pissed off, they went back to the Shell station on the way home they'd used to see if they could make any sense of it, used a different pump or whatever. They went into the shop and started to ask questions, the guy behind the kiosk handed them a card to contact Shell as it was their mistake, the Vpower tanks had been filled with diesel!

I wouldn't say so, if you have an ultra high compression lairy N/A engine, you'll also benefit hugely from it.

Like an idiot I filled my frs up with asda standard unleaded and it felt rubbish, holding back. Filled up with vpower and it's great again

My car has always run on tesco 99, cant notice any diff between that and v-power.
On BP ultimate it runs like poo!

What everyone needs to remember is that for high octane fuels to be of any real benefit the ECU needs to know what fuel is in the car and have separate advance/fuel tables to use with it.... otherwise the engine runs as it always does from a mapping perspective.
That doesn't mean that the engine runs exactly the same as on 95 RON (the combustion will be a little different) but any difference will be very small... or at least should be.

Pretty sure my V8 ECU works all that out from knock sensors etc.
(The drivers manual even tells you how it behaves differently with different fuels and just how bad they can be)

Slightly off topic but I have noticed that when I fill my daily driver up at Tesco's with normal fuel it seems to not last as long as if I fill up at say BP, is their standard fuel lower quality or are their pumps out.

I do a 200 mile trip to work on a Sunday and a 200 mile trip home on a Friday and I have noticed that supermarket fuel doesn't last as long as BP, Shell, ESSO etc. I use regular unleaded and the MPG gauge in the car seems pretty accurate to within 1-2 MPG working it out properly. On a good run I find the car will average 46-48 MPG on BP etc but on supermarket fuels I've seen as low as 38 and generally around 42 mark. I've been monitoring this over a 2 year period and supermarket fuel Defoe does not return the same MPG as better quality fuel.

I believe bp ultimate is best just not worth the extra Łs then shell vpower then shell regular then tesco 99 iirc there was a test done in a mag a few years back and the outcome was tesco 99 was full of junk to get it to that 99 octane rating? and in fact shell regular unleaded performed better as it was cleaner it was a while ago but im sure someone will remember

if u go back a good few years and look at the technical pull out in performance ford all the fuels were used on a yb engine on a dyno at field motorsport . the best results full stop were the optimax which is now nitro v power
