Default s1 ecu problems and tuners near cambridge

I just bought a s1 and it looks like im having ecu issues. When I start up all the dash lamps light up for their check but then the bottom 4 start flashing for about a min. The owners manual says it means there's a fault with the ecu. Is there a way to check the codes without a reader. In an old Pontiac I had you could stick a paper clip in the obd socket and it would flash the codes at you. Also on another note does anyone know of a good knowegable tuner in the Cambridge area. Hopefully someone that specializes in old fords. Cheers

It's got a rather erratic idle at times. where it revs up and down. And it always seems to be idling at a diff rpm.
