hi mate,

i think the reading should be around 160 - 175 depending on the state on the engine but I maybe wrong.

Could be due to some dodgy valves not sealing, im sure someone a bit more technical will post up on here but im sure 50 is not even close to what it should be, must be flat as hell to drive?

Hope it gets sorted mate

Is your compression tester a decent item, I had a cheap crappy am-tech tester off ebay, it was telling me porkies, its now in the bin.

Should be around 150-160 on a healthy engine, if it was rings or something like that making it that low id expect a fucking lot of smoke and to be popping the oil cap off especially when it comes on boost as you would be filling your block with pressure, tbh mate id get a decent compression tester before I looked into anythin else

try it on another engine
if the numbers are that low i'd expect it to need alot of turning over before it starts

or wind up the boost to 30psi

Bit of smoke on lift off is more likely the turbo, it certainly don't sound as if you have low compression, you say it pops, when did it last have a set up?

Are you using wide open throttle during the test?

I dont think it could account for that much of a significant difference, and suspect, as already suggested, that maybe the compression tester is at fault.

Compression tests aren't the be all and end all (not as useful as a leak off/down tester for example), but that is very low!!

I had compression down on 3&4 it was around 65psi and wouldn't start or idle. It's possible your dynamic compression is down if you're timing is out, or a big cam etc. if it starts n drives well enough I'd say the figures are off.

My engine looks to have shat its rings cause I got a bores cope down and they look scored.

Cam overlap can make a difference, so can the engine turning over slowly as more air escapes before the valve closes, old test to check if its rings is to put a small squirt of oil down the plug hole and see if compression jumps up on next test.

I think the idea is all 4 cylinders are consistent to a point, your results seem low, But your car seems to drive fine etc. Try a drop or 2 of oil down the bores and turn it over when its hot and with the throttle wide open (un plug fuel pump fuse and coilpack) then see what you get, maybe try a diff tester too!
If its driving fine, starting well i wouldnt worry.
Does your dipstick or oil cap ever pop off/out?

Something must be wrong with your gauge.
50 psi compression will definitely not start at all.

Hello,

It's generally considered to be slightly rude to ask questions in someone elses thread so you might want to start your own.

If it really has a T4 turbo you've answered you're own question. That turbo is too big for a 1.6 engine, it wont boost til late up the revs.

I wouldn't be TOO worried about that. I had to start mine on a rope and checked when warm, 3&4 had around 60psi. Best I got was 120.

Hence building a fresh engine, just my luck really but yours wouldn't cause me any worries.

Lowest I had was 105ish on 1&3 and around 120 on 2&4.
