do you run a gasket between the turbo and manifold? they are garbage and should run face to face. i used a gasket here that failed the 1st time i gave the car berrys.. if not id suggest the ex manifold (ex to head). alternatively, could be tappet related

if it comes from beneath the rocker cover, then whip the tappets out and look for signs of a sticky one. you can squeeze them in a vice to free them. oil sludge can sometimes give the tappets problems. you could also try flushing the engine but i have reservations about this. do you know if the engine oil has been changed regularly?

with the std cast material, the manifold/turbo expand at the same rate maintaining a seal. as s/s and the cast material expand at different rates id guess that a stainless manifold would req a gaskets.

Now then i had similar problem on 3i for about a year, had a miss so got head rebuilt after diagnosed as burnt exhaust valve, 11k miles later a valve head came off. Turns out after the rebuild the exhaust guides wore causing the valve to land unevenly on the seat, which made a tapping noise, mine went away around 3k revs. Everyone had put it down to piper lifters being rubbish but exhaust valves were wobbly in the guides. Eventually a valve head broke clean off and punched a hole in a piston.

Definitely worth checking for any wobble in the valves, you can do this without removing head but it'd be better if you can.

If they're worn id look for a reconditioned head and swap all your bits over, can do it in a few hours easy enough.

Are you saying the tapping noise only happens when you press the throttle, as this would suggest bottom end to me if the noise is only happening under load, or as said above a worn valve guide but I would expect that to rattle under any throttle condition

hi tbh its going to be very hard for anyone to tell you wants wrong with your car without hearing it for them self someones tapping could be another mans knocking or blowing so you need to take it to someone who knows there stuff coz load of people on here are going to try to help and someone mite get lucky and guess whats wrong with it or you could end up changing loads of bits that dont need doing

good luck mate

I second this, someone who knows cvh engines will have a good second opinion, modern garages dont know shit about older cars.

I can 100% say my valve guides were worn which caused a valve head to fatigue and come off the stem, the tapping was there at idle, came and went between there and 3k where it was silent and wasnt really noticeable above there.

I Will third this.....but to help you lets look at the visual stuff..... Is there any signs of an exhaust blow? Ie black marks on of gas escaping round the manifold.... If you unplug the spark lead on cylinder where you believe the taping noise to becoming from does it make it quieter? If so could be a crank bearing but again could still be an exhaust blow.... Depending on above quoted advice........

As a final thought, I think someone should make an iPhone app with dodgy noises from cvh engines as a sound board we could have, 1 , tappets 2, bottom end rattle 3, exhaust blow 4, air leak on bottom boost pipe 4, knackered thrush race bearing 5, fucked gearbox!

I could go on unfortunately! But remember the 30 mins a year when your car is running sweet and you beat something much more exotic along the bypass and it's all worth it..... Good luck

Did this start AFTER you changed the oil? I also think that you used too thin a grade Mobil1 for an older engine. Good Luck.

Cheers, John
