it sends a power signal from the horn switch to the horn
the horn is earthed on the chassis

There should be a sprung contact tail that fits to the steering column and then plugs in to the loom, 200mm long or so if you want to use the steering wheel horn push.

Surely it goes via a relay Sierras horn switch completes the earth for the relay and thus trips it. I would be surprised if Escorts were not the same setup?

edit:

basicly when my old 1.3 ovh engine was in, the loom had wiring for the horn, but since I've done the conversion I havent been able to find the horn connection on the new loom that is now in there running my mfi engine, so can't I just make up a set of wires (red + black) from the steering column somehow and run it through the fuse box?

This is how I would expect the setup as per the OE setup, two permanent live connections (Via a fuse of course) to a relay, from the relay to the horn(s) the ground for the relay goes via the switch and the other side to earth.

When the switch is closed (Actuated) this completes the relays earth circuit thus closing the relay so then live power is sent via the relay to the horn(s) which have there own ground connection.

Correct, exactly that! If the setup is the same as Sierra's that is which i am sure they will be, as with all other Fords of the era!

When i converted my old estate i had this same problem what i did was find out what colour wire it was for the horn wiring from the haynes manual which i think is yellow with a red stripe but im not 100% on that so best to check. I then used a sharp blade and carfully cut some of the loom tape off on the lower cross member that runs in front of the radiator, find the correct colour wire and solder/crimp a piece of cable on to reach the horn, plug it in and retape the loom up.

No, it should go via the relay hence why it's like that originally!

Will have a look in the morning but this sounds like the most viable option! Will let you know how I got on

Can't 100% remember on mk4's but the mk3 definitely doesn't use a relay
Yes it gets its power from the fuse box
Such a simple system, why would you need a relay as it doent draw a lot of current
Wire colour is usually red/yellow

Nearly all cars from various manufactures use relays in the horn circuit, Fiesta, Sierra etc are just a couple of examples, bearing in mind cars of a similar era of the same era use a similar design I can't see why the Escort would be different, horns are fairly juicy (Especially twin horn setup) given that they are only being used for a short period of time, plus some cars use the horn(s) as the alarm!
