Default TurboTimers

As a couple of you may know im on the lookout for an AFR gauge atm...
A turbo timer is also something i may want to add in the future so ive been looking at this - http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/p.../autotimer.php

What do you all think to the above?
Does any1 run a turbotimer currently?
What r your opinions on them?

I havent used their timer products but we have used other bits from innovate on our cars at work and they are fantastic! never had a problem with them and so far all accurate readings.

hope that helps you in some way

Looks ok to me Roger, I have one built in to my alarm and use it if I need to leave the car in a hurry and haven't had time to let it cool down.

As my car is a toy, I'll never need one as I'll never be in the position where I can't let it cool off before I switch off. I always drive the last mile or 2 gently to allow it to cool off anyway and if I have been giving it some pain, I drive around for 20 minutes afterwards as they take an absolute age too cool down which makes a turbo timer pointless unless it's set to run for about half an hour.

Oh really? Mines cools off quite quickly, altho im not running the sort of power levels i guess you are daz. I spose its coz once it gets hot it takes an age to cool again. I prob don't thrash mine enough to heat the oil up too much. Also worth noting im not 100% happy to give mine greif atm so it doesnt see more than about 5,000rpm!
Mine is becoming more of a toy and by this time next year it will be solely a toy i expect and hope! I do drive the last 2 or 3 miles of a journey very sedately off boost, to let it cool as best i can.

Ideally i'd love an aux water pump that runs on for 20-30mins with the fans to cool her off!

Even at 200 brake I got the manifold and turbine housing glowing red and it still remained red for a good 15 minutes afterwards. I pulled over after 10 minutes of gentle driving and then drove around some more to let it cool off a bit more but the get the manifold back to normal took ages. Bear in mind that if you just switch off, all that heat is soaking through your turbo bearing core and burning the oil/water in there. That is why I always give a good 30 minute drive after a good hard thrashing, but a few short hard bursts that don't result in a glowing manifold will be fine with a 5 minute/couple of miles to cool off.

I've arranged in principal a rolling road to map my car on now so i should make some progress with it and get a power figure. I'm expecting over 300bhp this time.

If you have only been driving gently, just switch it off. If you've been giving it a bit but nothing sustained then drive gently for a couple of miles before parking it up. If you've been kicking its head in then you need to give it chance to cool off properly which means you'll need to potter around gently for a while while the exhaust manifold stops glowing bright red.

I think something really wasnt right there then Daz mate, my turbo and manifold never glowed even at 240bhp on a little .36 turbine housing! Only time I've seen a RST turbo and manifold glow was when the timing was far too advanced and was detonating which ended up with a cracked piston, of course timing being too retarded can also have the same effect.

Even after about 2 hours of sustained thrashing? I'd get my car out, fill it with fuel, cane the shit out of it then take it home with about 1/4 of a tank left. Did this 2 or 3 times a week. Maybe I was giving it some severe pain but that's what it was there for. It wouldn't glow with a couple of runs up the bypass but repeat for several hours and it would.

I'd never had it glowing until I had pushed it that hard. Then just thought I was being pussy and not driving it hard enough. It was set up by MSD back then and remained about 4 year like that. Standard manifold on standard .36 back end on a bar of boost.

I'd sometimes stay out longer with it but I'd usually go and get a coffee from McDonalds or somewhere similar and give it a rest in between. Where I live is a ring of bypasses that go all the way round the city so you can go one way round and then go off a few roads that branch off and back in again and then back the other direction. You can quite easily spend hours out there. Sometimes you just don't want to go home either!

Daz - Sounds immense! 2 hours of death lol!

Ive given my car 20-30mins on the road, and 3x 1 hour sessions at a track (that was when it was NA mind you)

My manifold glows pretty easy, after about 5mins of thrashing... Some underlying fuelling prob im sure, hence why MS is on the cards!

My mate used to get his glowing on a totally standard RST after 10 minutes thrashing. My Dad's cossie will glow after a sprint down the bypass and back, as does all my mates cossies. A glowing manifold doesn't always mean there is an issue but it's worth while getting it checked.
