If this could be done effectivly then ford would of done it and there would be no need for a stronger box like the mtx75, getrag 6 speed, or the volvo one in the focus rs/st

Yes it's an IB5 and yes they are a bit stronger, not massively so but better than nothing.
Diesel or not is irrelevant, any IB5 will be an improvement over the BC.

You can buy 6 speed IB5 boxes with different gears and LSD etc. costly.. which is why the MTX75 is the best value for money gearbox option.

What sort of power and torque level is loosely regarded as ''safe'' with a ib5 plus diff before you need to be looking at changing up to a MTX75 ?

Can a ib5 happily run say 250 - 270bhp ?

Christian ran 350bhp through an IB5 and it was fairly reliable, he also fitted a drain plug so the oil could be changed regularly and easily.
I've been running 240bhp through one for the last year and not broken it, this is after breaking four BC box's.

Standard BC box was built for ~190 Nm torque
Standard IB box was built for ~195 Nm torque

There are rumours about diesel boxes being stronger, but I've not seen any proof yet... well some diesels had MTX boxes fitted. They're built for more torque than the BC/IB5 boxes.

A friend of mine usually broke two gearboxes with his S1 (1850 CVH, WM management, T34) during one summer season.

Was the standard box a diesel ib5 one or petrol and did you have it rebuilt with new standard internals prior to fitting? Cheers

Maximum power i want to run is 300 and the car for mainly road use which the boost would be turned down for and the odd quarter mile when it would be whacked up haha

Speaking of diffs running an ATB will break your box easier IMO, it's a very harsh diff, I now run a Racing Puma Viscous LSD which is much 'smoother' although it doesn't give quite as much grip as my old ATB it's a good compromise.

How do you tell the difference between the B5 and the IB5? Can the standard LSD be reconditioned?

IB5 has more webbing on the casing to prevent flex, it also has a core plug behind the main shaft bearing that can be seen when out the car.
Yes the RST LSD can be reconditioned.

i converted my mk2 fiesta zetec turbo to run a mk1 focus rs gearbox.

what it cost me (sort of i broke a mk1 focus so got the box cheep)

box expect to pay £600

shafts £200 a set (you can use different shafts but i used the rs ones)

lincage £50

hydro clutch conversion and gearbox mount £140

clutch and flywheel (second hand £150 if your lucky)

i had to space my engine forward 15mm. I cut the inner chassie leg to make room for the box had to make a back mount i used the standard mount and worked from there.

as for the shafts i had some sleves made up (if any one wants some made, same as the mount and clutch conversion i can point you in the right direction) so that i could slot a mk2 xr2 shaft in one end and a focus rs shaft in the other cut them to the right lenth then welded them.

i ran the shafts at 15psi (260hp) but have now sent them off to be made into one piece shafts

This is mine. I was told it was an escort diesel box. From my research Im hoping it is an MTX???

It is hydraulic clutch, and operated by a shifter linkage.

cheers

Do you have any better pictures?

The mtx has the rod linkage to the left where the ib5 is on the right

Thanks mate. How easy was it to fit the FRS LSD? what did you have to change? driveshafts? I am going to compare mine very closely to this photo later tonight if I can get it out, which I am planning to do shortly

Ignore the large steel bracket on the left of the pic (its for clutch slave cylinder mounting)
and also the rod linkage shown on the other picture. I will be reusing that for the new box.

SO, what are my options? If I have a focus RS box, can I swap the internals out and put them in this? Are the gears shotpeened in the RS focus box? is the LSD and easy swap into this case?

If I use current case then I could use current speedo etc? thanks

As an update to this. I am buying an RS focus box.
I am hoping the ratios will be good, I am guessing they will...

I have no idea how I will get the speedo working, I also am hoping I can use my shifter rod linkage mechanism as the cable setup will be a right pain to customise for a non Ford FWD car I think...

Anyone?
