So it's just the stereo that plays up, everything else bar the said light is ok?

You don't by any chance have a sub do you?

Would think it's something to do with the radio power consumption or the installation personally.

As I say do you have a sub? If it were alternator then you would have noticed it by now and it woulden't make the stereo cut out, however if you do have a sub etc these can pull alot of power, maybe demanding more current then the alternator can supply hence illuminating the no charge warning lamp, earths are good idea to check as well as they are more than likely corroded and a clean won't be no harm!

rectifier could be braking down in alternator, time to replace rectifier/brush pack or get a recon unit fitted.
parts are about £15, easy to change (5 minutes)
recon alternator would be about £50

From what you have said it sounds to me like its the battery terminal loose or the ignition switch multiplug is loose/poor connection, I would check these first, especially the ignition switch multiplug, its is a large black plug under the steering column, just take the shroud off and you will see it, give it a tap and a wobble when trying to start it when you have no power

Ok, in that case yes I should think it's a connection problem, do as said above also it may be worth checking the engine earth strap?

check the battery connections mate, mine was doing this and missfiring when going over bumpy roads after i fitted a new battery. It turned out one of the connections had worked its way loose, once all tightened up its running 100% and starts first pop with no hesitation.

Loads simply impossible to list all of them, since every item has an earth, some use common earth points, others there own, to be honest it's usually the earth point thats the problem, due to the age and the inherent problem with rot/corrosion, the wiring not helping either due to age, I would just visually inspect all the underbonnet connections as these are the ones that are exposed!

The engine earth strap is also an often overlooked but important connection!
