A simple way of describing it would be to say...
When there is no air entering the engine there is no demand for fuel ie) the metering flap (which measures air) will be fully 'up' and not allow any fuel to the injectors. Cranking the engine (as long as there are NO air leaks ANYWHERE) will pull the flap down, thus allowing fuel to be injected.
The more air that enters the engine the more the flap is pushed/pulled down and the more fuel is injected.
This is one of the reasons a slightly weak starter motor upsets an rst more than a car with efi, the starter motor cannot turn the engine over fast enough for the metering flap to be pulled down.
Take all you plugs out, turn the engine over (with them out), clean up your plugs and make sure you have a strong spark.
Check all electrical connections to the metering unit and unplug your cold start injector (for the time being).
Then, after the plugs are back in crank the engine whilst some one pushes the flap down by a FEW mm's NO more or you will flood the engine again.
ie) your metering unit sounds like its doing its job, and your problem probably lies else where,
Rob,
