Default MFI set up

When it comes to getting your mfi set up properly where are the best places to go. The cars will either be up in the Inverness/Aberdeen area or down near Manchester. Also how much should i expect to pay?

any decent garage with someone who has worked on older cars should be able to do this for you. They should check the base ignition timing, the co with a gas anyliser and the idle speed, and adjust as nesesary. Its also worthwhile pressure testing the boost system to check for leaks. There is a special extra long allen key for adjusting the co, and they will require a timing light and the correct timing figures to set it (15 deg with the pipe off iirc) nothing else to adjust on this system other than the above.

Aye apart from your EMFPR, TPS, actuator and bleed valve if needed too.

Sitech in Blair Atholl or AVA in Glasgow. You could try Wallace Performance in Aberdeen but would give them a bell first and check they can.

by tps you mean throttle switch? the electromagnetic fuel pressure regulator should be ecu controlled and never need adjustment. and adjusting the boost via the actuator is worth a mention too, but not a difficult task all the same.

Yes but not saying it needs adjusted but should be checked along with eveything else as someone may have already fiddled with it previously.

The actuator is not difficult but the tuner may not want to adjust it till the car has cooled for safety reasons.

My advice is to take it to someone who fully understands KE as it has a few quirks that 95% of mechanics / technicians will have no idea about.

P.S: The EMFPR almost ALWAYS needs to be adjusted.

Thanks for the advice and replies. I remember taking an old escort to a trusted garage and when they hooked it up to the CO2 it was reading off the scale. Turned out the previous owner had been fiddling around with the fueling.
I think i'll probably go to ricky gauld once i've put the head back on the orion. It was running ok when i took it off the road but a check can't hurt. Might be a few weeks before i go though so you might get there before me. The RS Turbo will probably be later on in the summer as it's a bit of a mess.

I would take it to some one who knows what they are doing (has dealt with rst's and mfi before) and has a rolling road.

I don't doubt you can set up a standard car with a CO% reader, however anything modified will need the ignition timing changed from stock, best done @ full load with det cans on a RR. The EMFPR is 'adjusted' by the ecu as chaffe says however only to with in certain limits (as far as i know) the actual base fuel pressure is usually adjusted with the EMFPR making its adjustments as needed on top of that. IMO one of the reasons MFI is such a compromise on a modified car.

Good luck!

I stand corrected, how do you go about that? Its not the same as setting the iddle mixture when the flap is on its stop is it

three hours should see the head off, stem seals and a new timing belt done, and it all back together, nae bother.

You remove the unit, there is an adjuster on the under side of the EMFPR, this adjusts fuel pressure.

Be warned, adjusting this will increase fueling EVERYWHERE, its just moving the hole graph up on the y axis (if that makes sense). This is the only way to fuel for above standard power on mfi with no 5th injector etc.

This is why most rst's run horribly rich off boost.

*the secret fuel pressure mod* lol, if you connect a vacuum line to the main fuel pressure regulators atmos take off you will lean the mixture off boost and increase fueling on boost. This helps (a little) with the horrible rich off boost problem. Obviously its a bit of trial and error to get right!

I knew mfi was complicated due to its mechanical nature but i didn't realise it was this complicated. I can understand now why so many people upgrade to efi. Alot simpler. I think that might have to go on the wish list for both cars.

I've only just moved up to elgin from fife so looking forward to the super long 20 hour daylight summer days. Just need it to stay dry. Getting both cars moved up on sunday and joined a local motor club with access to ramps. That should make it easier.
