Car already has full series 2 running gear from my rotten car and it was fast enough but I lost interest in it for ages and decided in the new year I'm going to make it quicker.
The running gear is basically standard bar some samco and a group a coil, a magnex system (not my first choice but a big mongoose would spoil the sleeper effect) etc nothing fancy but was very quick for what it was.
Now I have a GRS to go on so first up I'm going to fit that along with 2 kenlowes. I was then looking at an alloy rad from Auto Specialists as I want to fit these bits and forget so a fresh rad and thermostat and good flush out will obviously be good. Once the cooler is on it will be going up to power engineering for a setup, but straight away I'll be wanting more power, where would you guys go from there with it?
Think my plans of getting the water and air situation good is the best place to start?

yes but don't forget the brakes and suspension. I'd get those sorted sharpish and then move onto making it faster.
is the current one chipped/ do you intend for efi (if not, you should!).
Do you intend to stay 1.6 or plans to move onto zetec/zvh?.

Suspension is Gaz, the fronts aren't fitted in the kit and the car has the series 2 brakes and braided lines all around.
The car is MFI and currently has no chip but I have a PTS chipped ECU and the matched fuel one to go on it so the boost can go up when it gets set up. Car currently has a -31 but standard cooler.
For now I think staying with the CVH so what would you say is the shrewdest way to start modifying it for more go after the cooler/rad/fans and more boost?

you'll find that you will easily become use to the power once the chip is fitted but the upper limit is up to you. Pushing mfi too far is not ideal so swapping for efi would make sense.
But defo do it stages and then see how far you want to go. Get your cooler and chip done, tune and enjoy for a while.
I wanted to go full zetec but now staying with my zvh, efi and possibly a cam in feb and job done!

Yes I do have an engine for sale if you need one, built to handle around 240bhp keeping the stock rev limiter of 6400rpm to be rod safe.

Mate, I reckon you'll be happy with a bit more boost and a chip tbh. My rst is running 164bhp with a bar of boost, chipped ecu, -31 and shiny backbox and it feels quick enough for a 22 year old Escort!

Whatever you do, there are more ways to skin a cat ie you can get xxxbhp a numerous ways, but there are ok ways and better ways, its always better to get the car and engine ready for the power first then up the power later in respect to keeping it on the road and reliable.
cj - if my shonky car ever gets its wheels back on and mapped you are more than welcome to have the keys for a spin, but you must then say after you get out and back in yours that you are happy with your 170 odd bhp lol YOU WILL GO FULL ZETEC WITH GT TURBO AND BUCKET LOADS OF BOOST MY FRIEND LOL

Will see how it goes with the whizzzzzzzbang turned up in the new year! Will obviously leave it to the garage but what sort of boost you reckon is safe with the big front mount and that?

I reckon you are wrong cj old pal, I had exactly the same idea as youn, my block is built with 300bhp plus in mind but I always had a figure of 230 - 250 in mind with matching torque in mind,,,,,,,,,,,,,until crazycage threw me the keys to his red fez, I threw the kays back scared after a quick spin in it as it truly scared the living crap out of me, but now,,, well lets just say the cts stage 2 box has now been sold, focus rs box sorted, and a new figure of well lets just say a few ponies more in mind has been laid down on the gauntlet. But after all that I know I will still crave more and end up selling the house for a cossie lol

Jamie @ Jamsport advised me that all I *really* need is a double capacity jobbie to see 200bhp if I fancy upgrading in future...

Cool looking forward to the new year now, will get cracking with it as soon as I'm allowed out to work on it. Poor thing hasn't moved in so long, I parked it there some 6 months ago and hasn't turned a wheel since.

Not to disrespect Jamsport but if you are thinking or going for more power mate that is unlikely to make 200bhp without a good font mount IC and a stage 2 T3, the double cap IC's have a very bad rep for keeping ACT's down over about 14psi and a stock T3 will only flow for about 185bhp.

Thats a nice car mate as previously stated in your project thread
power wise it comes down to money, so you can spend a few quid on the current engine which imho isnt worth doing, efi turbo would be better or zvh where the gearbox starts becoming the weakest link! on from there zetec turbo with mtx75 conversion but as said it depends on your budget! whatever you do just keep it looking the way it is on the outside and maybe a roofrack with some empty suitcases on top lol

Not that I'm an expert but as I was recently in the market for an intercooler the double capacity ones are practically the same, if not more money than a full front mount. The full front mount is obviously better but thats not to say the double capacity ones are a complete waste of time, just that there are now better ones available for the same money, making them the obvious choice but if you have a pace double capacity in the garage and wanted to run a bit more boost the Ł400+ it costs to fit a brand new front mount properly might be overkill?

what u need is one of these mate , A front mount should be mandatory for over 200bhp , i dont care what anyone says.
A nice big front mount will only do good and will be better long term, u want be able to wind the boost up properly with a double size cooler as it does not drop the temp enough
It did take alot of modding to get this into my FRST , but u have alot more room to play with in an escort

I have a GRS to go on mate and twin 10" Kenlowes, just arranging to send the GRS back to the gent who made it to have new mounting tabs welded on can't wait.
I have installed the chipped ECU units on the car today, I think I'll get the front mount fitted up then send it for a set up, run it like that for as long as it lasts and when it lets go look at EFI with OFAB...

That makes perfect sense. If I were buying brand new then yes, I'd probably go for a full front mount too, but if I had a double capacity in the garage and Jamie reckons it'll do 200bhp then I'd put that on and see how we go ![Top](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/smile011.gif)

Ah ok yeah, I've ran a stock T3 on a fresh engine and it only made 185bhp on DD rollers, in addition to my own experience having spoken to Christian @ APT, Stu @ MSD and Karl @ NMS they have all said stock T3's wont do 200bhp on an RST so I'd say it's pretty sound advice.
