Default rs turbo running problem??????????????? help!

right ive just brought an xr2 turbo for a project & it has a running problem???
the car starts fine, runs fine, drives fine untill u try & boot it & then when it comes on boost it just farts outa the exhaust & doesnt go anywhere???????????????

it seem like its over boosting or droping onto 3 & no go???

car has had new:
spark plugs
dissy cap
roter arm
leads

chap i got it off has also tried new fuel pump. injector seals & fuel filter????

he said the car was running ment with no faults untill he nearly ran out of petrol & its been the same since!

has new tappets in engine but had a top end rattle when i got it & thought it was fooked tappets & they wasnt pushing valves down which was causeing the problem. but again no go?????

its the cam that has a slight rattle when u rev it between 1k rpm 3k rpm but not sure if this could be the problem?

when u rev the car stitting still it revs & then backfires on back off?

any help would be nice

POSSIBLY could be the cam...the knock sensor (or some sort of sensor in the head) maybe picking it up as the rattle is really loud...the way to determine this is to drive the car hard in the first 2 gears and see if it does the same thing...if it pulls past 3-4k with no probs then its likely to be the cam...

but if it does as u say above...then something else lol

and the way to be certain if it is the cam...floor it in the higher gears where the car is under a huge load...if it holds back between 2-4k for example then its mroe than likely the cam

if not give the filter a try and see what happens...might have picked something up when the petrol went low and its just blocked in the filter...

might wanna also check the metering unit and see if thats opening up ok

bloke i got it off said he's had metering unit appart & still no joy?

think its had new fuel filter but will check 2morra.

the cam is knocky between 1k rpm & 3k rpm burt after that it goes quietish??

defo the cam thats noisey as its had brand new tappets fitted & ive had several people check it & they have all said its a cam rattle.

car doesnt boost up in 1st 2nd or any gears??

boost gauge goes to 16psi & holds it but cat just holds bak & sounds like its gone oto 3 cylinders?
tried turning boost down & still no joy.
tried new ecu but still no joy.
tried new tappets (another set) but no joy.

cam is noisey so gonna change it 2morra & see if it makes much difference

were any of the tappets badly worn?, take ur rocker cover off and check that each rocker arm is lifting to the same hight, it would have to be fairly worn to start causing serous problems, my escort used to pop and bang from the carb and it turned out to be a badly worn lobe on the exhaust side as the chanber was still under pressure as the inlet valve was opening

hello m8 . id try the waste gate solenoid as well might be that playing up or is it running on a bleed valve ?? if so and has the pipe from the metering head to the solenoid been blanked off or is it open to the elements ??

no the tappets are brand new with no signs of wear?

1 thing i did notice is that on number 4 cylinder the top of the tappets were squashed right down.
but this could be cos the oil had drained out of them buy the time i had taken the rocker cover off?
ive replaced them but it still did the same thing.

gonna change cam 2morra & see what the out come is.

i have a power engineering cam to go in it but will i need anti pump lifters?????

if so i will just fit another standard cam for now.

My s2 rst is doing exactly the same as this, hits 10 psi, holds it, then exhaust rumbles really loudly but car wont go any faster, this is intermittent in 1 2 3 and 4 but permanent in 5th. If i feed the power on gradually, i.e build up the pressure steady, then accelerate hard i can normally get away with it. On about pipes being off there is a pipe off coming from rocker cover? Also there is a bleed valve on there. If it is intermittent, i.e sometimes its ok for a few days then it comes back, surely it must be something on the electrical side?

might not be then mate!
my old rs turbo used 2 do that & it was cos the standard "turbo to metering unit" hose had gone soft & was crushing under load.

if not more than likely 2 be 1 of the reasons above.....
