The inductors do get hot, i never said they should get as hot as yours!

As i explainered to you, half of the driver board is there simply to drive the tacho, so i suggested running it with that part disconnected.

we would be more than willing to take a look at it if you book it in, but i cant test or diagnose the issue without seeing the car really, The driver install looked ok, apart form the board being fitted upside down, but i cant comment on the history of the driver itself or how it may have been fitted before which may have damaged something internally.

i dont know what else i can suggest really apart from book it in, leave it with me for a day, and i will see if i can fix the issue.

we fit quite alot of these, and none have suffered this issue before.

James the car will be with me at some point so ill have a look at the driver and the rest of the system. Its caused him loads of headaches and has made him miss a couple of shows and track days which is a shame. Ill update with my conclusion so it might help others in the same position.

indeed mate, if it is a faulty driver then fire it back to me and we will replace it. but im sure there is something else causing the issue tbh

I hope so as its made a couple of people lose confidence in the driver which is not a good thing for either of us.

It was tried with tacho connected and not connected it made no odds, after the first time you looked at the ecu I remounted the driver as you suggested and drove the 2 miles to your workshop, upon which you had a feel of the inductor, already so hot it would burn your finger and told me thats normal

You cant win them all mate, we have sold around 400 of these from memory and have very very few issues, and when we do, its related to either bad installs or the old tacho's drawing too much current.

Jano, its easy to look at this circuit. Simply disconnect pin 20 INSIDE the ECU, IE: Cut the orange wire, that will totally disable the tacho drive circuit on the board.

You can then use a diode pack to drive the tacho direct from the coil.
Job Jobbed.

Hello Studabear,

Just for us (Canadians) who are unfamiliar with the UK factory type ecu.
Is the wasted spark driver a add on component or circuit board?
Here we typically use a Bosch wasted spark driver - low cost and dead reliable.

Thanks for the information.

That looks like a great bit of kit!
Provided it has been assembled correctly of course.

I don't understand what a tachometer would draw too much current? Is there not a current limiting resistor in series with the diodes?

Cheers.

Perry
