Default speedo problem

hi

my brother has a 1990 s2 turbo which has a strange problem with the speedo, when accelerating the speedo goes up as it should but when you back off or change gear the needle goes up and down like a rev counter.

so far weve changed the cable and tried a different speedo head with no luck, then we took out the speedo drive which was worn so we replaced that with a new one and all was good for a day or 2 and then it starts playing about again, i took the drive out again and its worn this again.

has anybody got any ideas as im lost what to try now

cheers

Ive been told before it could be the diff bearings on there way out thus leaveing more room for it to move around and wear out the speedo drive in the box.
