Hydralic Lifters / Cam Followers
After some help once again.
Had the head gasket go on my Rs Turbo and to top it all off I drove the car hard when it hardly had any oil in the engine (didnt know at the time) Had the head gasket sorted but needed to sort out the awful tapping noise.
Now ive just replaced the hydralic lifters (cam followers) and on inspection I had one which had a really big dish taken out of the bottom. Fitted the new ones and the car sounded great, took it for a spin and all good first of all. After some spirited driving the car has just began to tap again! gutted.
Ive havent took the rocker cover off again yet (car is still hot) anyone shed any light on the situation? do I need a new cam? dont understand why the tapping has come back?
Any help always appreciated.

No didnt rev the engine like you have described, what does that actually do?
Im sure the tapping is from the same one again, ill take it apart in a an hour or so to have a look.

Well took the offending hydralic tappet out to find it had somehow failed on me, the lifter had become loose and you could physically push it down by hand etc.
I put one of the old lifters in its place and the car still tapped so I turned her off and gave up. Started the car this morning......no tapping, ive been out in the car through out the day, probably covered 30 miles or so with no problem what so ever? ive driven it hard, cruised along slowly, had it up to temperature let it go cold again etc.
Im assuming one of the oil ways must have been partially blocked and its now cleared it self? Glad its sounding nice now though!

My wise old father said the same about leaving them in oil over night (think ill listen to him next time)
Ive bought engine flush already, not sure if i should do it or not after reading internet horror stories.
Once I had the rocker cover off it didnt look that bad, the only problem I could see was there was still traces of oil that had mixed with water lying around (not much but just a little)
im assuming if I use engine flush and just let the car tick over for 20 minutes it should hopefully get rid of the old oil and I can drain it all ready for a good fully synthetic oil.
Didnt notice the rocker being loose, pretty sure it was tight but it seems to have cured it self now though.

Yeah ive read some horror stories and also read some good things too.
I might just buy some cheap 10w/40 oil and use that to try and flush it through then put the good stuff in.

if 1 of your old followers had a big dish in it the cam is junk
you will need a new cam but your new tappets might get damaged too
check your oil pressure too
you only run the tappets in when you fit a new cam,not usually wise to put just new tappets in

Gutted.........the tap is back from the same hydralic lifter!!
Not sure what to do but from what you guys say the cam must be worn. Im not chasing big bhp fiugres so I might just buy a standard cam kit from a local motorfactor.
Ive got a haynes manual but from looking it doesnt seem like a simple job?

Cam and lifters should always be changed together anyway, they work harden in the first 20mins (at 2500rpm'ish), IMO your cam and new lifters will probably be scrap, you may also have plenty of swarf going round your engine in the oil.
I would flush with shit oil a couple of times (run for 10mins then flush), then fit a new cam and lifters and decent oil, run in for 20mins driving at between 2000rpm and 3000rpm but DO NOT let it idle at all until that running in period has passed.
