Default over heating problem help

can any body help me out i bought an escort rs turbo it had been stood a year ive sorted all little problems out but dont no were 2 start with this problem the fan is not kicking in and the temp gage isnt working i drove it up street and it started ov heating i notest that steam woz cuming from under bonnet and the water bottel had hole in it . it woz ok before i drove it up the street hope it hasnt done owt 2 head gasket

check the cts is connected, its near the exhaust manifold in the cylinder head, this operates the gauge, if it is connected try earting the wire, the gauge should go to max, if it does the sender (cts ) is fubared.

start by checking the plug for the fan switch is connected, this is a iirc blue plug on the thermostat housing. if it is connected unplug it and bridge the terminals, if the fan then works (ignition on) the fan switch is bolloxed,

Try these areas first and report back, hth

as above.
if its been stood for a year i would probably change fan switch and thermostate anyway

c t s coolant temp sensor, as to if its damaged the head gasket, depends how hot it got and for how long
