Default what gearbox will fit ?????

just a quick question

does anyon know what other gearbox will fit in a mk5 escort van ??

my van has a series 2 rst engine fitted,
got it a couple of week ago running rough,
finaly bottomed the running fault, went out for a good test run & got over exited tried chasing a zafira gsi
& my diff bearings have gone i belive as it sounds like a plane on takeoff ( whines very loud)

i thought it had all the mk4 escort bits on it with it having the series 2 engine so went out & bought a good xr3i gearbox & set of driveshafts,

took it to the garage i use for them to fit it & since found out it had the standard escort van turbo diesel gearbox fitted (gutted)

does anyone know what other gearbox will fit ?
im wondering if a zetec box will go or a rs2000 box etc

i can get hold of another turbo diesel gearbox but dont know what way to go with it as the diesel boxes are low ratio i belive & from what ive read on the net would give me power low down but top out at around 85 mph & will be running high revs around 70

i aint really had dealings with gearboxes before normaly id just replace it for the same as what comes out but if theres another box that will fit & give me a better drive then its a ideal time for a upgrade

an early rs2k box should be fine in the mk5 car/van, its the mk3/4's where the problem lies as far as im aware

Ok cheers for the replies
Iv seen someone breaking 1 close to where I live

Will my driveshafts fit ?

At the min I think the van has standard diesel shafts
But the cv joint is clicking on 1
But I bought a decent pair of shafts with the xr3i box I got last week,
These should fit shouldn't they ?

Or would I need the shafts out the rs2k ???

hi. you are well confused.dont fit an xr31 gear box, i tryed one on my rs rubbish! flat out at 90. far to low geared! best replacment gearbox i found is from a mk 4 diesel van witch is slill fitted the ratios are high, i can do 90 in 4th!! i dont have the l. s. d but i can live with that. ok ,all mk 4 escorts have the same drive shafts, xr3i. rs turbo, escort bonus, diesel van, if its a mk 4 they are the same!!

Come on gents, let's read this again, this is a MK5 Van.

Which XR3i are the gearbox and shafts from, MK4 or MK5?

The best box for your van with an RST engine would be an MTX75 as found in the 2wd RS2000's and MK5 XR3i. No modifications required on the MK5 but you will need the shafts from the RS2000/XR3i too.

If the box and shafts you have are from a MK5 XR3i then fit those, they will be fine.

Also in reference to Grandad racers response, I ran a MK4 XR3i gearbox on my ERST for a short while and it was fine, it certainly never topped out at 90. Sounds like that was a diesel derived gearbox. Never the less, that would also fit your MK5 van, but I'm not too sure on the shaft front.

A mk5 td box is an mtx75 lol, but by the sounds of it this has a bc box, i would convert to mtx75, as mentioned above, get one from either a TD mk5, MK5 xr3i 130, or rs 2k, you will definatly need the shafts, gearbox mounts, a bigger fywheel, bigger clutch, the mtx gear linkage and probably the clutch cable and hubs off of the mk with the mtx. But as ford made this car with this box then it doesnt get much easier as far as conversions go, best of luck.
