tappets are shit mate, check the timing is right before you start it up. Chances are you have crap lifters that are made cheap.

is it a kind of rattle mate? if it is could be that the timing is slightly advanced on the distributor which is a easy enough fix

did you fit just the tappets or a cam aswell, u say a cam belt but was it a cam kit, no point fitting new lifters without a cam as if the cam was warn then you prob just done the new lifters in.

is it running ok or on 3 cylinders?old cams and new tappets can go together as long as the cam is good and not showing signs of wear.if its worn it will tick from the moment its fired up and get worse.if your pal just fitted tappets then he wouldnt have had the cam out to check it.if its lunched a tappet then you will need to change the cam,tappet/s and oil and filter and cross your fingers the oil pump is ok.this happened to me last week and my engine was ok.i bought new tappets from an engine builder with 30 odd years experience who told me that if the cam is fine then you can use it with new tappets.if its worn it will destroy them.get a better mate to fix it.
