Because the Mfi flap relies on a vacuum on the inlet side. As soon as you introduce an air leak the flap closes (can't open/open enough) so forces a lean mixture... so the car cuts out.

on most engines its more likely to mean you have fucked rings and its sucking air from the crankcase past them I should think, so quite the opposite to what he is saying.
