Do a search, this has been discussed only soooo many times.
The standard steering is not heavy at all, but it's really slow with the amount of turns lock to lock. After fitting a quick rack, it will become heavy. A power steering usually takes care of both problems at the same time.

Jesse has nailed it.
As std, it's not that heavy, especially when you're moving. The problem is it's so slooow. It feels more like steering a boat than a hot hatch. Putting a quick rack on solves this, but then it really does become heavy, making manouvering nearly impossible. My gf struggles as it is when i run 215 tyres.
Forget about hydraulic power steering, it's old fashioned. Race cars defo don't use it, but they do use electric power steering which assists the column. Here you don't have any engine pumping losses, and have full control over the amount of assistance. Andy G runs this on his Focus as well as countless others.

corsa power steering pump fitted to the escort steering column need to use the corsa PS ecu and a sensor to monitor how fast the car is travelling plus need to cut and weld the steering column.

Driving on the road is fine. Its parking where its a nightmare especially if your quite boxed in.
Car would be so much nicer to drive with P/S imo.
Will the Mk5 CVH Escort steering be a straight swap over ?

It will definately not be a straigth swap as the rack is totally different. Rod ends are of different size, the rack is longer from joint to joint, the mounting is diffrerent, and the splines are of diffeent standard for the steering column.
I have my conversion now finished and it's working nicely. Mondeo 2.0 Zetec turbo engine with mk6 zetec Escort PAS pump and reservoir joined with a 1987 US-Escort rack.

i know a lad who has a mk4 cabby with power steering..its genuine ford stuff fitted at the dealers as the car was originally a motability car..i wanted to buy it off him until i tried it..there wasnt a lot in it..the gains dont justify the cost or chew on fitting it imo..maybe electric pas may be better..i fitted a new standard rack and the steering is much lighter..prob a knackered rack is the most common cause of heavy steering

i wouldnt say it was that hard to do!! but its for girls and a waste of time, get a punto with city steering if thats your thing , just some of the shit that was thrown my way when i asked about it lol

if i were to use every day i may have considered it,but as im building a fast road track car its prob not for that as you can feel the road more with the rst steering, just a bit heavy under tight parking spaces

there is no assistance when moving, it just works at parking speeds. It has a torque sensor which detects how hard you are turning the wheel. at speed as you never have to turn the wheel hard, it doesn't offer any assistance. At parking speeds it gives as much assistance as necessary to stop it becoming heavy, which is why it's so good on track cars. It really is properly impressive.

If you read into it more, the cars up for braking, and TBF i couldnt see you beating him.
Good luck on that pal.
Regards the PS, It wouldnt be the same tho, its a classic car with no Power Steering to Feal the road more, its what owning a car is all about.
