Default 300bhp+ turbo's....

Nearly finished my new engine build (1.6 steel bottom end/forged pistons etc, 8:1 c/r) and thinking about turbo specs to make bigger power than i had previously! The old spec made 245bhp on a hybrid t3 at 1.5 bar boost, i want up nearer the 300 mark this time so what turbo's you using to do this??? Not wanting a laggy pig though as the car gets used on track a lot....t34 of sorts is the obvious step up but thinking there must be better options than that surely...i realise some people might not want to divulge any 'secrets' lol but being a fellow enthusiast hopefully some will as i can't really afford to try a load of turbo's to find out what doesn't work! Any ideas welcome, cheers
Dave

300 maybe too much for a stg 3 t3,other options are t34/0.48 or a gt2871
try and get the smallest turbo for ur apllication dont just go big for the sake of it

is it a home build?

who's gonna map it?

i would go and have a chat with who ever has built it / will map it, tell them what you want and ask see what they recommend

mine is a t34 / t4 roller bearing thingie

Home build, mapped by a well known evo tuner on omex 600, he mapped the last engine too. The thing is i've been chatting with him about it but as he's had no experience with rst's (1600's) really so he's not totally sure what to go for (and it's not like he's making loads of money out of me). I realised the t3 wouldn't be up to the job lol, the gt28 and the t34 are a couple of possibilities discussed, there are presumeably variants of the gt28?? Which spec should i look for? As jambo said i want the smallest turbo to do the job so as to minimise lag. Cheers for the replies guys!

stay with the t3 mate and that power 300 is fun but not realy any better all you will get is loads of lag and then loads of wheel spin so your not actually going any faster lol mine was best on the stage 3 t3

28 describes the size of the exhaust wheel. THe number after it, eg 2871 means it has a 71mm compressor. The GT2860r would do 300hp, so that would be a good option for you. I'll be mapping a 1.6CVH on a 2871 at some point, i really think this will be the ultimate turbo for it.

Rick.

Ah right i see now, cheers Rick! 2871 seems to ring a bell, as in what i've seen advertised, have you actually driven or been in any with gt28's on?? It's the fact that it's a 1,6 that makes it so hard to spec the right turbo as there's not really any other cars to compare with/nick ideas lol. Lag and massive wheelspin are not what i want....would just bbe nice to have a bit more, you know how it is!

heard the gt28 can handle 300+ and will spin up quick, but wont you have to mess about to get it on the manifold, unless ur goin custom? heard people putting the escos small turbo on before,

Yes the flange pattern is different so will be a bit of fabrication work (or a new manifold) but that's not too much bother.....anyone know where to get a 2871/2860 at a reasonable price (genuine garrett)?? Also the ones i've seen look like they come 'naked' i.e no outlet for intercooler hose and no back end/exhaust flange to bolt the exhaust pipe to, oil return pipe etc, do those bits sell seperately?? Be good to hear from anyone who is actually using/used one to hear exactly how good a job they do?!

You ever actually run a GT2860 on a 1600CVH? I have.

Also, there are alot of variations of the GT2871, with fairly big differences between them.

C, no, i haven't. My first thoughts would be that on a CVH 300 would be a push. How did you find it?

I have had good sucess with GT25 63 for the 300bhp region, and they spool up so quickly. You get a bar at 2500rpm.

300bhp was a push. Nice turbo for 280bhp though. Not sure if its worth the agro of fitting it mind you.

Oh right, how did you find the gt2860 then lag wise/boost to make the power?? Not big enough?? What are your thoughts on the 2871.....too big?? Looking into it as you say there seems to be quite a few different options when speccing those, but the option of having the t3 flange pattern would make things a little easier!

I'll be on a dyno on Tuesday with a 1640cc CVH equipped with a GT2871R turbo on an internally gated T3 housing. I'm not too sure what to expect as this is the first GT turbo I have used on a CVH, but Tuesday will clear that up.

I'm slightly nervous about it to be honest Rick. I'm positively shitting it. I hate first time fire ups and mapping sessions.

I'm just hoping I haven't over specced the turbo as it's a big fucker compared to the T3.

I'm the same to be honest mate! I have mapped a Zetec on this turbo and it spools up from nothing, the car is mega mega responsive ( done a 12.8 and there is plenty more left), it's going on a GT30 now lol. I think it will be spot on. Richie who has my old engine/your engine's twin lol is going to run the 2871r too and i'll be mapping that in the next 3 months or so. Let me know when it's running, i'd love to have a go

mapping it on the dyno is one thing. Getting it running in car is another! I've got till the end of july to get the car back on the road.

yes, full part number is something like GT2871R - 742247. The 3 bolt housing has been replaced with a T3 type 4 bolt housing.
