Default Vauxhall LET Engine in Escort

Found these on the net.

Anyone know anything about it?

Probably a nice cost effective conversion - keep the 6 speed box too, think the mounts are pretty similar positions on the vauxhall gearboxes?? Then have a few mounts made up and then a set of custom drive shafts and plumb it all in.

The vauxhall gear linkage wouldnt be a problem to use either as ive seen then used in the XE into a mini conversion and they bolt to the floor inside the car with the selector going through the bulk head.

Great engine/box combination for the money really, although getting harder to find good ones.

Wouldnt you be better putting it in a decent shell like a corsa though, instead of a rubbishy old ford escort? Or do you have a particular fondness for escorts?

Corsa shell has 31% more structural rigidity than a mk3 escort one, and is 74kgs lighter.
It also has a 7% better track/wheelbase ratio.

Have a fondness for Ford Escorts im afraid! :-(

Got a good one at the moment and I like the idea of something different.

Looking at getting more power (like everyone) and everyone seems to be going for Zetec Turbo's these days but its alot of money to build one and then you have transmission problems on top of everything else.

Looks a really cost effective conversion to me. Just wondered if anyone knew anything about it.

My shell is seam welded with a roll cage and rose jointed suspension and weighs 905kg with 1/2 tank of fuel.

So its not too bad a basis to start with and I would get bored if I didnt have things to fix or repair at the weekends anyway!!!!! :-(

my best mate is into his vauxhalls and you may say that it seems a cost effective solution, its no different to putting a zetec lump in on a budget. Regardless you want more power and to run more power on the c20let you are still going to need uprated rods, maybe pistons as they are good for around 350 horse (maybe not) loom conversion, management etc etc.
You mentioned you liked fords then why not stick with them completely, I do think the idea of a 6 speed box is awesome though and having been in my mates corsa I can see the attraction.
I say either corsa, vaux powered or escort ford power... just keep it the way nature intended just my 20 pence worth mate

On a like for like 300bhp zetec turbo its going to be cheaper. Internally the LET would cope as it has forged mahle pistons as standard, it also comes with loom and management as standard that with a chip, pressure regulator etc would see 300bhp, again with the right turbo. The zetec needs managment for a start, low comp pistons and rods and valve springs, cams and probably a sutable inlet manifold to even get 300bhp!

You also get the six speed box aswell which is strong enough and wouldnt be eating itself every five minutes.

Im going to obviously price it up and do a few comparisons and see what the costs are - and they will be realistic.

if you buy a donor car you used to be able get your money back by selling off the rest of the car in bits. I gave £600 for my last Calibra turbo...the previous owner was kind enough to get it rebuilt then go backwards through a sign and some shrubbery before it was even run in

Let standard internals are good for 350bhp safely generally.

pistons will take 500bhp if you want, the rods wont though.

turbo is only really good for 280bhp

the management and loom are fine for 300bhp

Why do let powered cars wheelspin so bloody much?
My mate has had loads running 300bhp approx, and most of them will spin the wheels up in 4th hapilly in the dry, and in 6th in the wet.
i have been in other FWD cars with the same, if not more power, and they done do it?
Do lets make all their torque/power low down of something? Or are vauxhalls just crap at grip/Bad suspension set up on my mates cars?

I had a C20LET put in a 1.0 12v Corsa ''sting'' with a 5-speed box it was running about 240bhp,i don't honestly think you'd need more than that if you decided to put it into a corsa although 280 can be achieved very easily, its an easy conversion into any Corsa B or C - even with a full suspension upgrade the handling was terrible - it was a death trap! Courtenay Sport do engine mounts for this conversion they could probably make you one up to fit in to any Escort too,

i would stay away from the corsa's mate if you thought fords were bad for rot you aint seen nothing till you have seen a corsa! i remember failing many 3 year old mk1 corsas on rot and now am seeing more and more with cracks right through the b pillars without ever looking like they have been in any kind of accident! whearas big power escort mk3's and 4's will at most with big power only rub the paint through on the a pillars with the top edge of the front wings!!!!!! lol (im not joking btw!)

why not just drop a st170 focus lump in turbo that...good for a bar of boost on stock internals, then you can use a bullet proof 6 speed box job done, cost abit more than the vauxhall which you would need to sort that out anyway with freshen up and bigger turbo to be reliable, great idea but dont put it in a ford especially an rs

that was the early corsa b's that suffered that problem, the later ones had a strenthening plate put in around that area
