I didnt understand... you have chatter without dv? Thats normal. but on my car is very silent

When I drive without air filter (just to try,I put some metal net instead of filter) there is very loud air sucking noise which sounds great, but chatter is still not so loud :S

eerrr it's got nothing to do with the metering unit!!
It's the sound if the charge pressure backing up and hitting the compressor blades!!
The metering unit acts a slight muffler as the sound has to pass through it and out the air filter (which is why EFi is louder), nothing to do with the metering units functionality mate!

So all this back pressure going thru the compressor is better than it being exhausted thru the dump valve?

I'm not being sarky, just don't fully understand?

I think metering unit is important in chatter, because when metering unit flap is at the top (closed, no throttle) sound cannot escape out, but when is flap down , sound can "go" out.
so when you relase throttle, if metering unit flap spring is weak, flap will hit top (go up,close) and will bounce a bit (going up and down, because of weak spring). this is just my theory but it is logical imho

adam: when you have dump valve, you will not hear chatter, because all pressure will get out thru dump valve. there will not be much pressure at turbo so it will not cut air and make chatter.

Well some say it's ok unless you are running REALLY high boost, and others say it's better to be released via a dump valve as it reduces spool up time (lag)...... guess we all just have to make up our own minds!

My own view is that if the blades have stalled/slowed because of back pressure then it can only be that it will take longer to spool up again so i'm in favour of D/V's.

I just thought something spinning as fast as a turbo then coming to a sudden stop/ stall can't be good for it?
My boost hits 18 psi and holds 15 psi, would you say this is average or high?

if you dont have dv, turbo will have that suddenly deceleration, when you left throttle. but T3 on rs turbo are not so sensitive on this, and most tuners will not recomended dv.

15 to 18 psi is higher boost. for standard engine.

My motor's not standard matey, and I have a D/V fitted, just wondered what all the fuss is about chatter and if there's any bad effects of it

so probably you have stage 2 turbo or so... then 18 psi peak is not so much for turbo. but 20 psi is limit , as many people told here, for standard rods.
"chattering" is not so bad, bat sure that turbo have some stress.

Like i said mate each to their own.....

To prove it one way or the other you would need two identical engines, one with a DV one without, driven identicaly until one of the turbo's died, and then you could really do with repeating the test 100 times to be sure of your results!
Never going to happen!

sure. But dv also have their negative sides. blowing air in atmosphere make little differences in fuel mixure. I know thats all in theory but it is logical. I try dv for about 2 months, nice sound, but I prefeer without dv, and I want louder chatter :S

Your car must be made out of cheese like mine then mate! lol I've had new turbo, new head, new bottom end and new box! last thing I want to do is put undue stress on anything under the bonnet!

I think when it comes back from the garage on thursday I'm going to polish it and put it away untill it's next MOT is due, this seems like the only way you can have an RST without it costing an absolute fortune!!!!!

I run my RST (MFI) on 17 PSI and I've never heard chatter so far. Maybe my exhaust is too loud. :P

I think it's got a lot to do with the airfilter aswell. Do the guys who have loud chatter use modified induction systems by any chance?

The only way I get chatter is to remove the hose between actuator and amalvalve/compressor. Comes with unlimited boost though so you better keep an eye on the gauges...
