Default HELP!! PLEASE

Can anyone please help because I am getting so depressed. About 2 months ago my alternator belt snapped and the car broke down, so had it towed home. It was left standing for all this time. Last week fitted a new belt and the car went into the garage for some other work on the suspension.
When I drove it there it was miss firing really bad, the garage had supposadly sorted it out, they changed the plugs and said a plunger on the distributer cap was stuck in.
Got the car back yesterday and drove it home was missing slightly. I decided to carge the battery up yesterday and last night took it out for a run. No problems it went like a dream. All this may be coinsidence.
This morning drove it to work and was missing all the way, when i slowed down it would make a popping noise from the exhaust, it would not idle properly either keeps cutting out. Same on the way home.
What could be wrong? Is it cause its been raining and damp? Some one said my head gasket was going

i had this problem and it turned out to be my cam shaft, excessively
worn on piston number 3, also check the rubber washer on your brake servo cause if this leaks due to age (mine did split a bit ago) then not enough air gets to piston number 4. i got a washer of a 1.3 escort mark 4 free of charge so it did not bother me that much
