Default Rear Bearing sutck on Axle.

Help!
OK, so it aint an RST, but the rear bearings are the same so don't flame me!

To cut the story short I now have the center of the 'outbound' bearing jammed on my stub axle.

The rollers and cage fell out in a tangled mess when I removed the hub leaving the center jammed fast on the spindle.
No amount of whacking, swearing (incl the C word!), will shift it.

It appears to have pretty much welded itself to the axle both in the center and at the edge of the conical piece that it buts up against.

Any ideas?
I cant be the first poor sod to have this happen... I certainly cant be bothered with replacing the stub axle though I can see its doable without too much hassle.

Get a plumbers blow torch and a thin but sharp chisel.

Heat the bearing race with the blow torch for as long as you can all the way around the race itself to make it expand away from the stub axle. While its still hot, use the chisel to act as a wedge between the part of the stub axle that the race butts up agains and the race itself and hit the chisel with a hammer.

Cheers.

I was thinking of applying some heat, provided I can scrounge-up a blowtorch.

Hopefully it'll shatter into a million bits, teach the *** thing a lesson.

chiesel it off, heat usially helps to ease it out, but a good few whacks with a sharp chiesel to get it rotating a little will work wonders.

Just go and buy one from B&Q!! They're not that expensive!

Nothing would touch it.

A mate used a large blow torch (not a little plumbers one) and heated it to buggery until the whole stub was roasting.
We were hitting it with various cold chisels from behind, having removed the backplate.
Absolutely nothing. All we did was turn it blue and put a tiny nick in it. The chisel was hard and sharp, sparks were coming off it but nothing doing.

I ended up removing the stub axle and sending it up to another mates house where he ground one side of the bearing flat and tapped it off.

Funny as I didnt see any mention of beating 7 shades out of a bearing in my Haynes BOL. I must have missed that step...

At least you got of though!!

Grinding weakens it so it doesn't grip as much. Usually a last resort though!!
