Which Engine
Just in the middle of restoring my s1, my options are
1) give original engine a refresh
2) opt for a 1.9 tall block or
3) 1.8 or 2.1 zvh.
I have a front mounted intercooler fitted, scorpion s/s. what sort of power could I achieve out of each. I have a budget of around 3K not including the turbo?????

Forget that ZVH crap. CVH with a newer turbo makes more fun, also as 1600. Or go for a 1.8 crankshaft.
Or use the full Zetec, not only the block without the benefits of two camshafts

It Wasnt Me!
ZVH over CVH any day.
Zetec over ZVH any day!
Im going ZVH but only cos I have all the ZVH parts/big valve CVH head, i'd go Zetec but not wanting mega power so not that bothered about the hassle of selling my stuff and getting zetec

you will still need the 1.8 flywheel, oil pump, pickup, sump and waterpump though.
depends what you want really? do u want the car to look how it was first built or something newer in it engine wise? if its the first option the go for cvh or zvh for a bit more poke but if you just want poke and lots of it go for full zt.

CVH 1.6 or Zetec are the only choices imho
I simply do not understand removing the zetec head to replace it with a 8v head required for the ZVH unless you have a megabucks super ported one, if your starting from scratch I would always use the 16v head.
With a budget of 3k I would personally build a decent CVH and run it on decent management

Christan, Ollie and Tim gets around 350 bhp with deep pockets out of 1.6 CVH's
Newman cams are highly rated by most RS Turbo owners.
With regards to power it would depend upon how much boost you wished to run and a number of other things but you could get a great engine with your budget imho. The management choice I would suggest depends upon who you wish to map your car as I would always use what they are most experienced with rather than focus on specific brands or makes..... The rest of your budget depends upon how much work you wished to do yourself.
Ignore the fanboys who rattle on about one type of management over another and take the advise of the person you trust to map the car... great management is no good without a equally as great mapper and no matter what people say, experience and knowledge does matter

It depends on what you have to start with?
A Zetec block is lighter than a CVH
A Zetec block has a more reliable and effective oil system
A CVH fits !!!
I have a fully built up focus RS engine sitting in the workshop needing a home!
Having had a big power CVH 1.9, 2.0 ZVH and a big power Zetec my opinion is Full Zetec for 300bhp.

i ve spent a over 5k on my zvh engine and for the same money i could have a more powerful and rev happier zetec turbo, we live and learn 350+bhp from a 2.1 8v isnt to be laughed at though

Forged pistons - yes
Low comp - not for CVH or ZVH but yes for Zetec

seperate mate
pistons can vary depending on who makes them but anything from 350-700+
rods are the same farndon rods i use but there are few others beware of japanese rods these are weaker than std 120 per rod is an average price
some company slike p.e.c do a packagae with rods and pistons for around 800 iirc

personally it would be a complete rebuilt std 1.6 cvh engine with a good quality ported head with a newman cam and good quality managment and mapping i think this would be your best option with your budget

if I build the engine then I might be able to spend more. Alot of the work I can do myself, just cant be bothered. its easier paying somone else. Plus I dont have much time as I work offshore.

I'm with you on that, and it's what I plan to do. As already mentioned, go for EFi with a good cam (newman are very well rated), good management and have it mapped by someone you trust. I know I'll be asking my local tuner what his speciality is and what he recommends management wise!

Stick with the 1600 CVH mate. Just put a decent set of pistons in it with a set of these rods and it'll take all you can throw at it. Port the head and it'll make as much power as your turbo can flow air.

Just make sure you get the right bolts with them.
If you want massive power (as in more than 350bhp) then you're probably better looking at a Zetec but will still need to change the rods as they are not a strong point in a Zetec (like the CVH).
