still no dash lights?
run a wire from the pos to the black wire terminal on the coil (thread it in the plug and put it back on) then try it
if car starts it'll need stalling to stop
also is it a good spark?

I connected the main leads up correctly but it was the other wires from the loom. They are in a red plastic casing. i connected them up thinking they were the positive because they are red but they were actually negative wires. Any body know what the wires in the plastc casing are for? There a two of them.

i have checked the fuses and i have swopped relays in fusebox for some that i know that work. the fuel pump works whan ignition is turned on. The dash lights dont come on with the ignition when the key is turned but if i press the hazard lights then the arrows flash on the dash, same with the head lights.

did you try the wire from the battery to the coil?
Have you got an alarm/immobiliser? could be the immobiliser thats knackered if you've connected the alarm wiring incorrect at the battery. Just a thought but it may be that the ignition switch wiring is one of of the immobilised circuits.
Peel back the red sleeving. Some of the smaller terminals at the battery are actually fusible links that feed the fuse box and ignition switch. If they have burnt out you will have all sorts of odd problems. They may seem intact but may have burnt out inside the insulation. Worth checking.
