Default B&M Shortshift

Fitted the shortshift to my s2 seems to be ok for 1st - 2nd, 5th and reverse but seems quite difficult to find 3rd from 2nd if that makes sense, maybe just needs abit of tweakin but if anyone knows of any ideas. I haven't driven the car yet as im in the stage of rebuilding it, its got a new stage 1 box in too if that helps?

cheers for any help rich

It is just adjustment. Just as the gearshift is so much more positive, also it is far less forgiving and therefore the adjustment must be spot on. When you shift between 3rd and 4th, that movement should be perfectly straight.

Because Michael that's where they are made and the Ford (that's an American company as well by the way) Escort was indeed sold in the States

Not quite sure I understand your 'logic'. When you ask a question you clearly already know the answer to in a sarcastic way it's reasonable is it?
Yet I reply in the same but truthful manner (you were trying to insinuate I was waffling) you seem to take offence....Paging Dr Freud.....

@ Ivorbiggum......Never knew the Escort was sold in manual in the USA,never knew they produced a high performance Escort over there that sold enough to have a market for a quick shift in the States. And never said or implied you was a waffler, either in this post or any other post.I'll make a mental note not to bother you again.Regards,Dr Micky Freud.

None of these badboys look like the owners would be crying out for a quickshift conversion

Must be the reason why they had a dozen spare

http://www.answers.com/topic/ford-escort-north-america

I knew there was an American Escort, but wouldnt have thought it shared anything with its European counterpart except the badge and name...
I think thats what Micky was getting at, the fact that Escorts as we know them were not sold in the States?

1000 appologies Micky it must be my time of the month...

But if you want to see a pretty definitive list of American Escorts the Haynes isbn 1 85010 658 4 (1981/1990) is very good.
It also includes a MUCH better section on the American Turbo charged version than the couple pictures in the UK version.
Incidentally the turbo'ed US version was available almost 2 years before the S1 in Europe.
And lets remember it produced it's 120 bhp with a cat and on shite fuel
/they don't got no 98 or 99 ron at the pumps in the States.

If the selector bar universal joint it worn it can make adjustment difficult if not impossible.

I think they are still available from Ford but i could be wrong.

You can however modify/improve the universal joint like this...

Hi mates!!

I have just fit my B&M Quickshift kit and I´ve got the same problem as Moose.
I did my best in adjusment help with a mechanic friend.
No precission when you find 3rd from 2nd and 4rd from 5rd. I need to go with sense to get the right way fo find them also very hard to move the stick to.
Seems to be that the B&M selector stick don´t go to a center position when you put it in neutral.
The standard stick selector go to center possition when you put in neutral helped with some piers that are in the standard selector box.

Advices are welcome................
Thanks

I have a Rally Design's short shift kit and it's excellent! Only £50 too!!!
Fitted it using the old 'Alen key in the hole' method to locate 4th and every gear is exactly where it's suposed to be first time!!!
Couldnt have been easier!!

Is the UJ on the selector shaft nice and free-moving, but with no excess play?

The Grease is included in Brand new B&M kit mate!!
If you don´t have it, you can buy Lithium Grease, I think it is the same grease.
