Default S2 Problems... please help

Have a series 2, its chipped, 16psi, have a pace intercooler and fast road cam.
It has just been fully rebuilt with new pistons etc.
I did notice not long after it had been rebuilt, racing down the bypass then back off for

roundabout and it was popping, this was due to the fact the oil filler cap had blown off -

wasn't sure why as it has just been rebuilt. But its been ok for a month or so after then.

Now just recently it has been blowing off more reguarly, also there are traces of oil coming

out of the dumpvalve, and its gradually getting worse.

The next problem which is baffling me is that if the car is left overnight, when starting in

the morning you get a cloud of blue smoke for about 5 seconds, but doesn;t seem to smoke at

all apart from then.

Could these symptons possibly be the turbo on the way out? or could it be due to a poor

engine rebuild?

Hmmm...if the oil filler keeps blowing off, then I think there is too much pressure building up somewhere, I am sure I have heard crankcase cause this, but im no expert and cant 100% remember. The smoke on startup is likely turbo, this is not un common. Did it have a new / rebuilt turbo?

the smoke on start up could also be valve stem seals which stop oil leaking down the sides of the valves into the bores when stood , then on start up it burns it off straight away. i had the oil coming out of my dumpvalve as well sometimes if you have a breather system the oil goes through the breather pot down into the metering head and gets sucked through and blown out the dump valve , if you take the boost hose off that goes to the metering head and look in the bottom you will find out if there is oil there this is the problem. The oil filler blowing off could be the breather pipe that goes from the rocker cover on the right hand side to the block at the back this could be blocked and the pressure builds up in the rocker box and blows the cap off. Hope this helps im no expert just whats happened to me try it and see stem seals r much cheaper than a turbo

Just done a compression check and cylinder 1,2 and 3 are at 175. Where as no.4 is down to 100 - so this must be the fault. Firstly what could be wrong? Poorly seating valve or dodgy piston ring? Causing oil to come past the piston or something? But then I would have thought it would be smoking all the time.

It has recently had new valve stem seals, still runs well and is quick, so turbo is ok in that respect.
Can i get an uprated breather system or do I need one? And if so what exactly does it do? The metering unit is getting oily - as is dumpvalve etc. Any more help from anyone out there?!?!

On my last engine it used to blow oil out of the dump valve and this was due to heavy crankcase pressure!! I tried a breather system it cured it a little then I dis connected the metering head return (blocked off the Metering head) and ran it to fresh air but still not much joy!!! It never smoked up until the last month or so before my engine died and when I stripped it down I had two big chunks missing off 3+4 pistons !!!!

Try and turn the boost down or strip the engine

You might have damaged a compression ring when you were puting in no.4 piston that would explain low compression. the only way your going to find out is to take the head off i'm afraid mate.

Sounds the same as what happened to me. It sounds like its done a ring in. Did you get it rebored / honed when you did the rebuild?

Cheers

if the ring was fitted incorectly it would break straight away. if it is a ring at fault i would say it is either ran lean on no4 and heated up piston and nipped a cowpression ring up which could be caused by been drove hard with either poor mixture or poor spark. Or possibly the engine may have been over reved and damaged at some point. how many miles was it when it started to play up. I assume it must have been at least over a 1000 miles as you first noticed it RACING down the by pass, which you wouldnt be doing for the first 1000 mile running in period. So this cancels out poorly fitted rings. Hope this helps and you get the trouble sorted ASAP.

Mattbibbs - no wouldn't have thought I would have been anything to do with the valves prob. Don't worrk my dring, no insinuating a poor engine rebuild! I think its just bad luck, or possibly a bad set up by millers if it has been running lean?? Might take the piston out this weekend if I have money/time and see what the prob is!!

right, mine blue smoke out in a morning, and did the same with the starting. What had happened was the turbo oil seals were very worn, thats why I had oil coming out of the dump valve, also when I changed the turbo the smoke in a morning was alot better. I was also told that if the seals are worn u could be pressurising the oil system through the turbo. as for the starting take the plug out of the bk of 5th injecter. it is also nown to be leaky injecters aswell. it will be a combined number of things thats why it tuck me fecking ages to find the prob. also get someone to follow u about, so they can check for smoking my guess it will somoke when u put the foot bk down good luck lad.
