Default Emgine Management - Advice Please

I'm looking to convert my engine management from MFI to anything else - What management systems would you recommend?

I've got an efi head, inlet manifold, flywheel and a cps sensor.
already fitted.

Just want to know what you would advise or what you would advise against?

Please include price details if known.

ps - I was lookng at go-tec, is there anyone other than jamsport that can map it?

Cheers in advance,

Bryan

Before choosing a management system I would choose who you wish to map the car as they will have their prefrence

I personally like cosworth management as Tony from turbosystems can map this, Stu from MSD can map this, Amhed from Grove can map this as can Jano from oddkidd creations.

Many people will comment on the age of the system however by the same statement we should not be driving S1's and S2's or Cossies as they are all about this age

I would take advice from who you want to map your car

i think other people will be able to map gotech. as i am going to hav this system on my fiesta van that i am building. speaking to paul hills at EA, he said he can map this system as he has before. i then asked him what he thought of the system in comparison to cosworth management, driveability wise. he said its good and the car will drive and perform about the same.
now lets look at the price of the system, i was quoted around three hundred pounds for the system supply only. fitting the system seems straight foward. the ecu is new and so is the loom. the other thing i like is that the loom is ready to fit the rs turbo with near enough all the right lengths and connectors ready. the only thing you are left with now is injectors and fuel rail this can be delt with by a efi head and manifold etc...

you dont need any modified crank pulleys and phase sensor set up like the cossie management either. and depending on whos cossie set up you go for ie jano etc there are some other mods you have to do like alternator and bracket etc also the management bits for a cosworth are getting quite rare and dare

so 300 approx for the system and maybe 400 pounds for mapping maybe depending on who you go to, some may be cheaper especially if you buy a base map from jamsport.

i also have a escort rs turbo running on cosworth management and i know how much that cost me supply only which was far more than the gotech. the cosworth management has more scope for extras i suppose like water injection etc but then gotech also have their mfi pro x system which offers all the tricks too.

this is just my opinion and im sure there are people that dissagree. everyone to there own i supose. but i will post my experience once the gotech is fitted and compare the two cars.

regards

Megasquirt is very affordable and has many features but you won't get any guarantee on the work being as its a home-made ECU, for obvious reasons

Stu & Christian are both very reputable tuners but your pretty much as far away from them as i am, but you could be sure its worth the mileage

recently had DTA fitted to my series 2 and its made an unbelivable difference its so much better than mfi. I managed to get hold of a second hand unit and most other bits for a resonable price and would highly recomend it to anyone.

i converted my car to efi cosworth management and have had no end of wiring issues/loom problems. Havent managed to get the car to fire up yet, with the monitor giving all sorts of weird readings

One big bit of advice i can offer from experience here is wherever funds allow, use brand new parts, not 2nd hand internet buys. On my 2nd cossie loom after first one gave me trouble and i striped it down to find all sorts of horror fixes/repairs/bodges which i couldnt tell when i bought it as whoever had it last did a really professional job of taping it back up lol . Wished i had bought a brand new made up loom first time round from Ryan off here .

ive fiited my gotech myself and am currently running it in at 0.5 bar with my own map

it is not that difficult if you understand the basics of fuel and ignition , and run an egt and af meter like my drag car

im not saying tune it yourself , it has taken me approximately 150km of driving and countless hours of idling in my garage , and gauranteed the tuners on this forum will take my comments to pieces cos they want you to take it to them - ive been building and tuning CVH's for about 10 years so i know a bit about them

any tuner with half a clue can map them , the software is based on other systems like microtech , but each tuner has his particular liking(the one he makes the most money from)

my car will be going to Gotech at 1000km , for a paltry ZAR950.00

Just finished converting mine to efi, running an omex 600 ecu. As said above about the cossie management, nothin wrong with it and there's alot of tuners out there who get great results! BUT for me, the cost and availability of new parts made me go down the standalone ecu route. I went for omex purely cos it seemed reasonably proced and i had someone who could supply and map it for me. Cost a fair bit more than i thought it would after all the silly little things i had to do and was more involved than i realised, was all worth it tho! From what i can gather, gotech seems to be a much cheaper option but i'm happy with the results from mine.

Might seem like a really stupid question, but when you buy one of the stand alone ecu's like omex or megasquirt etc, do you get a full wiring diagram with it?

I recently did an efi conversion on a friends car, wasn't without its problems cause of all the second hand bits, but at least I could fall back on the origional FRST wiring loom from either Etis or haynes.

How would you do it with the others

onion: Yes, i had to buy the software package which came with various wiring diagrams, it's worth mentioning tho that none of them were specific to an rst so u need a fairly goood electrical knowledge to be fair. Basically the wiring harness i had to use was a universal one which i had to start from scratch....u basically get the multi pin plug that goes in the back of the ecu with all the wires coming out of the plug, they do various part assembled looms tho i believe.

My omex cost me about Ł700 for the ecu and software.......to be fair that's the tip of the iceberg tho as regards the cost of the whole conversion. As with all the standalone management systems u get what u pay for.

when i eventually convert mine over to efi i'll be using cossie management. although i'll be using all new bits except the ecu. and i won't have the cost of the loom as where i work i can completely replicate it from scratch best bit is it'll be an aircraft spec military grade loom and all it'll cost me is some of my spare time
