Default HELP..........Please

My car has a tappety/rattle noise on tick over which sounds like its coming from the head , when you rev it it stops and comes back as it returns to tick over. It runs but its very lumpy, it doesnt want to boost either, i ran it up the street and the boost gauge wouldnt go over 0, then it cut out but started straightaway. The problem came after i drove it hard and it blew the oil cap off, the cap wasnt a snug fit. Anybody had this problem, can anyone help ? Ive read that people have had lifter problems, with the same symptons as what ive got.

The car has a new turbo on it.

I have got a spare bottom end just in case it is that.............

There seems to be no cream on the cap or dip stick, no oil in the expansion tank, i would be happy if it was the cam or head gasket The noise is definately coming from the top end, could the cam have snapped ? Would this give a rattle/tappet noise and no boost.......

Im not much of a mechanic but i will get outside when it stops raining and take the rocker cover off, to check the lifters.

yes it would mate, I destroyed my cam in my old RS a few years back, made it misfire and generally feel very underpowered.

Easy enough to check, pull the rocker cover off, undo the rocker arms and pull the tappets out. Be careful not to scratch the guides in the head with them on the way out. You can check down the hole for the cam lobe wear as well

Could be something expensive to fix like the bottom end being gone, could be the oil pump on its way out, but that will more than likely be followed by the bottom end anyway.....

Could be blocked oil ways in the head if it hasn't been maintained well.

Having just re-read the post though it seems i got the wrong end of the stick, i thought the noise started when u revved the engine and that it was silent at idle.

You say you blew the oil cap off? And now its missing.......sounds expensive to me.

As per usual a compression test would never go a miss
