rst vs mk3 golf vr6
Hi folks, what do you reckon then, my almost standard (filter and exhaust, lowered 30mm) golf, or my mates 180 or so bhp rst. I'd say my golf's pushin about 190bhp, an i've had 150mph on the clock out of her. This isn't me slatin rst's, just a comparison of opinions. your comments appreciated.

Your pretty confident considering we havent met up yet due to your gearbox probs and my cashflow status at the moment. what I want is some feedback on the subject, i've seen other vs threads and everybody says the rs will win due mainly down to torque. but what if it's put against an almost equal N/A car? I think it'll be a close run race.

i would say the rst. but comes down to alot of factors like the driver etc.. no offence! and is the rst running a proper 180 bhp? if it is and the driver knows how to drive it to get the best out of it, then the rst will beat it. i used to have a rst running 185bhp and i used to love racing vr's. very close ist and 2nd but when that rst hits 3rd then i think it should be all over.

i use to beat standard vr6's with my 170bhp rst- alot quicker off the line due to weight, a bit closer match once upto 60/70

what intercooler are you running on the RST?
the VR6's are very powerful and fast cars on the move...
i have personally raced my mates one when i had my RST which was standard bar an exhaust and air filter...i hit a GPS 130mph and he was sat on my back bumper trying to push me out the way I know mine was only standard but i would have thought i needed atleast another 40-50hp to pass him with the way he was pulling!
Handling terms....its game over for the RST
i used to race my mates 16v 2L golf mk3 alot and i used to pull about 3 cars lengths on him in the first 3 gears....once rolling and top end came into it...we used to sit at the same distance...i couldnt pull...he couldnt catch!
oh and if u have a standard intercooler...u dont wanna be on the gas for too long on a top speed run....you will be looking bhp every second at 14psi

and game over for the rst in term of handling??
Vr6s are fat heffalumps- the rst will piss all over it through bends

If it's a proper 180hp RST it will have the legs quite easily. I really like the VR6, but it's a lazy engine, more l;ow down grunt than anything. Launching the Golf is nice n easy, but after that the RS will have it. Over 100mph, be very little in it.

i personally think its game over... the VW's i race are all my mates and they are LOW with WIDE rims...and my Esc had no chance around the bends...it would do well...but seeing a Mk3 Golf switching lanes at 140mph+ with no body roll as though it was doing 20mph was just something else
everytime i have seen a RST race a VW around here...seem to back off in the corners
the Golf chassis is better setup than the Escort in my opinion...of course this is my opinion and you dont have to spend as much money on the VW to get it to handle well around corners where as most RST owners arent too confident around the bends
The VW scene around here dont use 7x17's like alot of the local Fords...more like 8.5x16 or 10.5x17s :O :O LOL

The biggest problem will be the weight of the Golf, but it has 2 extra cylinders and alot more torque. The RST will whip the Golf up to a point but then it'll be a close run thing. Top end though will be the Golf.

Well guy's, say's pretty much what i thought myself, its gonna be close and as is ever evident, all down to driver input/error. As for handling issues, i've driven both cars extensively at very high speeds through the twisties, and theres not much in it there either, only thing different was the rst i drove was lowered only, standard everythin else, the rst feels more twitchy and light where as the golf is more planted and solid, it took me a long time to get used to the golf after driving more ''nimble'' feeling cars. Thanks for all your post's

Have beat many a vr6 in my 180bhp rst with 4' mongoose, k&n, intercooler, unlimited boost chipped ecu and handles well too with konis sat on 35mm springs with powerflex bushes, i am with rick, rst is a hell of a lot lighter so up to around 90-100 mph the vr6 wont keep up but top end i think the vr6 would have it

ive had both and seen as the vr6 is heavyer with traction control i would say rst but it depends on the owner as ya cant rip the shit out of the rst but ya can the vr6, close but i still say rst

RST. I've had a Mk3 Golf and they're nice enough but don't handle very well at all and the VR6 has a much heavier lump up front which can only make matters worse. The RST will need a proper 180bhp though rather than a pub 180.

as for handling its on rails. if u have a rst
line it up mate

223bhp in a car weighing 1180kg gives a power to weight of about 190bhp per ton. Based on that I'm not too worried, come back and willy wave when you've got about another 70bhp per ton
