is it possible to relocate the air filter on a mfi car by say having a 180 degree bend silicone hose which would fit on the metering unit and use a peice of tubing to mount the filter to the other end down by the gearbox to improve cold air supply? would this cause any running probs with the air filter being so far away from the metering units air flap?
something me and my mates were discussing today and wondered if it would work or not

the reason i wondered if it would work is so u can get rid of a cold air feed pipe to the filter, if i fit a std air box with the front cut off id still need to have a cold air feed to it, just trying to work out ways of improving the air flow to the filter without the use of cold air feeds as im not too keen on havin one poking out from under the car as they tend to scuff on bumps etc

the best option is that u use the original air filter box, with a kn or something filter in there. then just have a hose from the box to the front of the car.
that is way better than using a "open" filter, and remove the org air filter box, that it would have allot of hot air in, and cold air is what you want

Why will you need to fit a cold air feed to the airbox
i know fitting a cold air feed to the air box will cure this but i dont want a cold air feed pipe underneath the front spoiler as it tends to catch and scuff plus i dont really want the pipe to be seen on the front of the car

been honest mate I think your spending alot of time and effort in the wrong areas. At 80mph that air filter in the airbox will be getting as much air as it needs without having a length of crapy foil tube routing to it. Theres alot of very fast rst's on here with the original air box on, alot of people swear by em. Heat soak MAY be an issue at standstill but even with your 'cold air feed' this isnt going to change much or noticably, your intercooler is probably slap bang at the side of your exhaust manifold/turbo and your boost pipes running close to the hot engine, air that is 1 degree cooler going into that air box isnt going to make much difference, and when you get moving the feed will be pointless anyway. Just my 2p worth. My car is as fast as I'll ever want to go in a 17 year old escort and I still have the original box with a JR panel in it.

As said above really, standard air box modified to allow more flow.
people seem to swear by cold air feed pipes but in reality its a piece of shitty flexi ducting, does the best part of fuck all, at least a standard air box only draws in air from the front, rather than around the whole engine bay where its very hot.
As soon as you get rolling at even say 15mph there will be substantial air flow through to a standard air box even if it is behind the headlight.

It's all a load of ball cocks, the ram air effect may work for a N/A motor, but not an RST. And as far as temperatures go, anu heat in the engine bay is static - ie u aren't sucking it in, u are getting the cold outside air, or which there is plenty enough!

Ive got (not fitted to my car) a cone filter relocation bend adaptor thing for an MFI rst, it basically puts the cone 90 degree's but you could add another 90 degree bend to it, think it was off a jetex or jamex filter or maybe JRkit? feck knows...its black plastic anyway.

cheers for the replys guys
Even doing it that way will lead to the filter getting soaked with water off the road.
my s1 only gets used on sunny days so that wouldnt be an issue
i might give the air box a try and see how it goes, just gotta find one first
