Default fuel wont go in!

hi all, need a bit of help, when i put petrol in, i can only put in like 5p at a time before it clicks and stops. it happens to a lot of cars, just want to know why its happeneing to this s2. literally i can only put in 5p then itl click, then a nother 5p and so on. any ideas? anything to do with pressure inside the fuel tank or along the lines?

The pressure release pipe on the tankmay be blocked or kinked.

How do you fill it? Do you have the nozzle stuffed right in? If so, try filling it with the nozzle just in the filler neck - this will give a breathing gap and could show whether there's a pressure buildup that stops the pump.

I'd agree, we have a wee Punto and it is exactly the same. Just pull the nozzle back out a bit and don't pull the trigger quite so much. I've never had a problem with an escort tho so I'd have a look at the pipework next time you get the chance.

Is the fuel backing back up? Do you have a locking petrol cap, if not possibly someone has stuffed something down there. Highly unlikely but worth a check.

Any form of vent - don't know Escorts at all, but more than likely it'll be a tube on the top of the tank, that may or may not return to the filler neck to allow it to breathe.

My other half used to have a Nissan that wouldn't run if the cap was done up - had to be half a turn undone so it could breathe. Had a huge filler neck, so filling wasn't a great problem

The early cars have breathers built into the filler neck aswell as a small pipe on the top of the tank, the Mk4's have those charcoal canisters dont they, i have no idea what the crack is with them but i'd say realistically thats where your problem lies.
