Default S2 Non runner!

Hi, I am having problems with my F plate series 2 rs turbo. It all started a year or so ago when i was driving home and the car started to run rough as i pulled into my road and after swithching the car off it it wouldnt restart. This may just be coinsidence as it had been happening alot previously but when coming out of ronudabouts the car would suffer with fuel starvation with the fuel pump getting noisy and loose power, to attempt to solve this problem I replaced the fuel tank, fuel pump and filter and cleaned out the fuel lines with no real improvement. anyway I checked the car over to find that there was no fuel pressure at the injector outlets of the metering unit but good fuel pressure to the metering unit inlet. I then left the car in storage up until now. I have tried a couple of metering heads on the car and have managed to get fuel pressure back to the injector outlets. All that happens now is that the car starts for about 2 seconds and then dies again. The more you attempt to start the car the less it fires!! I have tried cranking the car and slowly pushing the flap open to richen the mixture but this has no real affect. I am also unable to find any air leaks that may be weakening the mixture. If fuel is squirted into the air flow meter manually the car will run so i know the ignition timing and cam timing are ok.

Is it possible that the fuel pressure is too high?? I dont think it is likely but somebody had mentioned this to me. the fuel pump does stop after initially priming when the ignition is switched on. I think it is more likey to be an electrical problem but am unable to find any good wiring diagrams or explanations on how this mechanical fuel injection is supposed to work.

I have been a mechanic for 9 years and am much more used to modern cars so as you can imagine not being able to diagnose this is slightly frustrating!! any help or explanations on the fuel injection will be much appreciated

Thanks for reading through my boring problem Sam

You should never suffer with starvation if your car has a proper tank in it, ive always had a habit of running my cars very low on petrol and have never had any problems with starvation.

Your fuel pressure is too low if you get no fuel out of the injectors (if you remove an injector and try to crank the engine you wont see any fuel from the injectors as you've created an air leak - you'll need to push the flap by hand)

I have tried pushing down on the flap and am getting fuel pressure to the injector lines. I am not sure if it is enough? The car is at work so i am unable to work on it until tuesday but i will get back to you. Thanks for the advice.

Can anyone give me any links to somewhere that will explain the workings of the metering unit/injection system on my rst.

thanks again Sam[/quote]

If the injectors are spraying fuel at pressing (should make a high pitched hissing) then it should be all good.

Have you checked to see if the flap moves whilst cranking? (obviously with everything put back together)

Default sorted!

I knew it would be something simple, I was getting what seemed to be good pressure from the fuel pump!! when i check the injector outlets on the metering head i also had pressure!! when i checked at the injectors themselves i had no fuel thus the fuel pressure wasn't enough to open the injectors. i ran a hose direct from a fuel can to the fuel pump and hey presto she fired and ran as good as ever!! blew the tank out with an air line and she runs sweet. gonna remove the tank and check properly, the last thing i want is it to lean off at full boost and have a meltdown,

cheers for all your help guys sam
