Do you mean you took the ABS off properly?
If so then i assume you have bled the brakes at all 4 corners?
Obviously there will be air in the pipes where you did the joints, and this needs to come out...
Are you sure you bled the rears ok? (With regards to the load compensators)

suck the fluid trough each side with a pump, you can buy from most motor factors, this will pull the air through, and yes ,make sure your load compensators are free from debris and close fully (no gravel wedged in there) and bleed the rears fully loaded, with the car weight on the tyres, car level as normal driving per se,awkward without a ramp, but it has to be done this way.
the brakes on an escort rs turbo will feel spongy unless you bleed them in the right order. its passanger side rear drivers side front, drivers side rear passanger side front. if that dont work you havent joined the pipes right when the abs has been removed.
just removed the abs off mine and done a rear disk conversion.
when i bled the system i did driver side rear, then passenger side rear, then driver side front , then lastly passenger side front!
you should allways start with the furthest away from the master cylinder then work to the front.
my brake pedal is now superb and thats with a rear disk conversion too
