Default S1 front mounted intercooler info needed.........

Couple of quick questions for those who've upgraded to a full front
mounted intercooler on their series 1.

What cooler are you using?

what fan do you use?

A mate is thinking of buying one for his mk3 project, and seein as you lot are a font
of usefull knowledge thought i'd see if anyone has any recommendations, or have good/bad experiences when using one!

CheeRS in advance.

GRS on my mk3. Here's two pictures that tell you quite much about fitting it. Never mind the red color car. The pictures are from a time when it was in my mk1 Orion.

So minor cutting and bending for the front panel to fit two 10" Kenlowes. Also the front mask need to be finetuned from the back and the lower mounts need to be cut. It's a bit easier with a single fan.

JesseT, have you got any pictures of the other side, from within the engine bay.

Ive always wondered how the rad etc bolts up, theres so little room in the front panel of a MK3.

I just cut mine out

The rad bolts as usual and does not need any mods. The IC is not bolted to anything, it's just pushed tight to its place by the rad.

really?

I would never of thought it would fit! Most series 1's have issues with the OE fan alone catching the front panel

not too hard to fit tim but i you would probably need to cut the from panel to fit well as per the pics at the top of the post.

one thing i would say though is while your at it try and get a hold of an 82 degree thermostat.

a good way to go would be to have it more like the s2 kit and find a way to hold your fans onto the radiator behind the cooler instead of in front of the cooler.

the theory being that the when the fans kick in at 90 degs they then have to blow through the cooler to the rad which if your sitting in traffic will warm up anyway, the fan cowlins also can deflect a bit of air around them when you have a set of more compact 10 inch jobs, not causing a massive problem but id presume the benifits of what ive just aid would be a bit of a bonus. might even get a free pony or two through the cooler

mainly just so it opens earlier.

so you can be run the coolant through the system a bit earlier, through the rad and fans then the engine.

helps when just pootling about if your rst's tuned and generating more heat which is sometimes the case with a big front mount i/c blocking the airflow thru the rad in traffic or just sitting about.

So u're saying that between rad and the front mount i/c there will be no fans. Doesn't it create problems with hot engine temp in this way? Especially in warm countries like the one I live in.

Cause I might go for a custom made i/c or fit something like from a Mitsubishi EVO if possible, below the radiator with custom brackets to make it fit in the middle of the bumper. What do you think guys?

Yes, the temperatures might go up if sitting in traffic, but the S1 has less room than S2 in the front and it's very hard to fit the fans in between the rad and IC.
Optimum would be not to put them one after another, but custom make something that would put the IC and rad over each other like the Cossie has as standard. Someone had this arrangement in an S1 here. i still have the pictures on my hard drive.

Could you please send them to me? Or post them here please? I would really appreciate it.

Do you know any details about this intercooler or who fabricated it for him? Thanks

Btw... looks like you have megasquirt. Do you recommend it? Is it difficult to setup/adjust?

In the meantime I checked on Forge Motorsport website and they make some universal intercoolers that might suit my needs. What do you think about forge intercoolers?

Found them:

It's only a 4x4 Cossie cooler by hte looks of it, so not the best possible, but the idea is good for an everyday car in a hot country.

I get this type of questions all the time. It's like any other ecu out there with the exception of being open-source and it costs ~100£. It's just as good as the guy who installs and maps it. Ability to read adn understand instructions is also mandatory for whoever is fitting it.
Some good things for RST's is that it can directly use all the cvh efi hardware (flywheel, ignition, sensors, idle valve, etc.), and also support the turbo related things (mappable amal-valve, charge temp based ignition timing, can use cheap (~20£) Motorola 2.5bar, 3bar, 4bar maps etc.).

That is Scott R's S1. The rad is not as high, but it is wider and twice the depth . I have the same setup on my S1 as does Shawn. Works very well

It is all custom made. Consists of a custom made rad, modified 4x4 cossy cooler, reverse charge carrier and two 8inch fans. I'm personally, only running 14psi of boost. But there is the potential to run much more. I would have thought it would be fine up too 25psi or so. Sadly my engine and fueling isn't up to that sort of spec though

Thanks for the pics JesseT. But I don't think that's capable for my intentions... I use it mainly for drag racing and maybe a ride on sunday, but definitely not for everyday. I think a Pace double size intercooler would be more efficient than that. What do you think?

However I was thinking of something even better... maybe something universal like Forge Motorsport have (although I fancy more GRS, like everybody afterall!). I saw one on a Vauxhall Nova or old Corsa I don't know exactly but the front of the car is very similar to that of an Escort MK3. The intercooler was situated starting from behind the bumper and stretching further below, leaving from the top of the bumper upwards clear for the rad. And it was pretty wide in size

The cossy cooler setup is far superior to a double capasity pace cooler!" I wouldn't have spent £500 on it otherwise The double capacity pace coolers are pants. The GRS etc front mount coolers on the other hand are very good and will handle what ever you can chuck at it. I wouldn't have thought my cossy cooler is far off the performance of a GRS and there is no pressure drop across this cooler what so ever

Thanks MJC. But is it a standard Cossie cooler or is it modified? And from where can I buy one please? Cause if it is as much capable I would solve a big headache!

It is a standard 4x4 cossy cooler with the end tank modified to suit the rs turbo. You can't actually buy this setup off the shelf as its all custom made. Your easiest option would be to go for a GRS front mount cooler. They are about £300 and then you will need twin slim line fans about about £200 total. All this is available off the shelf!"
