Im not too sure whats involved mate, obviously yes you have to reset them to compensate but its not something ive ever looked into.
Would be best to have the brakes checked on rollers after aswell to check they are balanced.

My S2 had ABS and I never had to alter any apportioning valve. I don't remember it having one fitted in the line. You got microcat pic?

They aren't inline on them, the bolt up to the central wishbone mount under car and have arms attached to the wishbones.
As i said its probably not essential but lowering the car will increase the braking on the rear meaning it could get a bit arse happy
I'll get a picture now!

Coolio. I think I know what you mean as well. I think it's like a small cylinder fitted in the brake lines themselves just after the lines fork left & right to each brake unit.

All Mk4 escorts with ABS had the load apportioning vales fitted. In the pic below I have highlighted the elongated hole that allows for the adjustment.

Basically all it does is shut off the flow of brake fluid to the rear brakes. The adjustment is critical to prevent the back brakes from locking up! If the car has been lowered then the amount or rear end lift will be greater to get the valve to operate, by this time the rear wheels will probably be off the ground and the rear wheels will be locked!
In the above pic the adjustment arm on the left hand side would be rotated anti clockwise (viewed from the rear) when the vehicle had been lowered. The right hand side adjustment arm would be rotated clockwise.
