Depends if you want to cut things. Standard front locations with no holes cut, you are looking @ 5.25" max with some of the locating lugs cut back (standard speakers were 4").
Rears, you can go up to about 5.25" again.
You can go bigger, but you will need to cut holes in things, and if you go too big in the rear pods, you may have trouble with the rear seat lowering as it will not be able to go past the speakers

On a standard MK3/4 cabriolet its 4" without cutting, very poor cars as far as audio is involved.
5 1/4" will fit fairly easy, 6.5" will just look pants and sound poor
