Default excessive play in steering wheel???????

Hi guys. Car failed MOT today on excessive movement at steering wheel. Basically the steering wheel moves slighly around on the column. I thought they were all like this as it is hardly any at all but it failed none the less. What would this be down to? Any favourite/traditional bits to check etc.

Thanks guys

There's a thread on it in here somewhere, but the search function isn't finding it.

Anyone added it to their 'favourites' file for reference? Also a lad on RSOC asking about this so would be good for him too
