T3 options?
As planning on changing from my T25 on my xr2tt to a T3.
But was wondering whats best,
spec, 1.6 cvh, flowed head, Newmans solid cam, running on a Reno 5 carb. 4wd inter.
The engines good for 240 to 250 bhp, but i'm not sure if i need that much.
What BHP can a std T3 with 360 bearing make, at what boost? and when will it peak full boost?
also same for a stg2 and 3, T3?

give Turbo Technics a ring,tell them your engine spec and what you want and they will advise on what turbo would suit your application. i did this when i was looking for a new turbo and they were extremely helpfull

you see every salesman by saying stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3 mean different things... so you question isn't clear.
and there are so many different T3 options that you can't even imagine
f.e. burton power:
1 stage. standard RST turbo
2. stage. the same turbo different bearing
3 stage 360 bearing .48 exhaust housing but ONLY housing is bigger. Cold part (compressor)stays the same exhaust turbine also
So if you want the same result you take .48 housing of the saab 9000 2.0T and there you go you have the same stage 3 turbo (the bearing part gives you no advantage at all unless it is ball bearing) If you take the whole turbo of the saab you will have bigger trim compressor as well

STG 1 = larger comp wheel, -31
STG 2 = plus 360 bearing
STG 3 = plus larger exhaust housing, and comp wheel.
i've been offered a Turbo Technic;s STG 3, unused.
spec = 0.55 comp wheel, 360', .48 ex housing, cut back blades, -31
i was looking at Burton power / universal turbos

i use a t3 0.48 exhaust and t4 0.60 compressor with a dash 23 wheel which is called a t34 your side.
i used to have a straight t3 0.48 and t3 0.42 cold
found the straight t3 was simply undrivable at 1.5 bar boost up to third gear.
the t34 seems to spin less at the bottom and pulls a lot harder at the top
you may find that the bigger turbos may max out your carb. i have recently ditched my Dellortos DHLA'(f)40's for EFi and gotech. The carbs made good torque but getting 3 to 4 km's per liter is a bitch , and the carbs were unpridictable

As for the carb, its good for 350 bhp, so should be fine for 220 - 250 bhp on a cvh.

The picture of steves turbo above is what i built many years ago for the guy who owned steve's car before him.
It is a 4x4 T3 with 360 bearing step seals etc etc.. The compwheel is a GrpN de-restricted. Works well on most of my setups running EFi.

Whats the difference between 2wd and 4wd cos T3's?
i know one will make 280 -300 bhp, and the other will make 300 - 320 bhp, but never looked into them as i've always had a T34.64 or a GT30 on my cossie.

The 2wd Cosworth Turbo:-
Lager comp wheel and housing than the Std ERST unit.
The 4x4 Cosworth Turbo:-
Large comp wheel and housing than the 2wd and obvioulsy bigger than the ERST unit.
All Cosworths were fitted with a T3 shaft 2wd 3dr, 2wd Saf & 4x4 Saf Esc Cos (large turbo) apart from the small turbo Esc Cos which is a T28 and obviously the RS500 which had the T4 shaft.

i got it as part of a deal for my worked T25, the T3 is 2+ years old, Was fine on the blokes car before it come off.
i've also got std RST turbo in my garage, so i might try them both, to see if theres much difference.- Road test,
I went out on Saturday night, to test my new head for the 1st time, and last time before the T25 was taken off.
Coolant = 92oC, oil temp = 80oC
ambients were 7oC,
I also watched the EGT gauge on different boost/ign timing. all held up to 5400 in 5th, even tho the EGT's peaked and held from early in 4th gear.
@ 13psi and 18' timing = peak/held egt's - 1410oF, 766oC
@ 13psi and 12' timing = peak/held egt's - 1475oF, 802oC
@ 19psi and 12' timing = peak/held egt's - 1500oF, 816oC, 37oC act's peak.
I also RPM/Boost/AFR/ACT checked from 2500 - 4500 rpm @ 19psi setting and 12' static timing. in 4th gear, held at set rpm for 4-6 seconds using the brakes.
2500rpm-----07psi-----13.4afr-----16act.
3000rpm-----09.5psi---12.7afr-----15act.
3250rpm-----16psi-----12.5afr-----20act.
3500rpm-----17.5psi---12.4afr-----
3750rpm-----18psi-----12.4afr-----20act.

due to a valve spring issue it didn't rev to 6200 like it did on the stg3 head,

The T3 is now fitted.
But at the moment i have a boost issue, due to the wastegate sticking slightly.
Anyway, its alot better for spool up than my T25, but at moment it feels slower than the T25, but un fair to say that till its running correctly.
its hitting 5psi by 2000 rpm, 8psi by 2250 rpm, and upto 25 psi by 2500 rpm
The T3 is now fitted.

i had a look at the xr2tt tonight, 1st chance i've had since the T3 was fitted.
Boost issue now sorted.
It was the awastegate sticking ever so slightly.
Now hits 18psi and holds.
And feels quite stronge.

I'm with Rick on this one. If you don't want massive power, that is 200++bhp, stay with the .36 housing. It makes a very responsive and fun car to drive. Can still produce the 200 and slightly more although anything over 200 is pushing the turbo. I changed mu .36 T3 to a 4x4 spec T3 and regret it. To gain a few bhp high up the range doesn't compensate for the better 2000-4000rpm power the smaller version had. If you want 250+bhp though, then you need to abandon the .36 housing.

Fitted a 2wd cos turbo with cossie 0.48 bolt ex housing today.
Had to
Spin the housing, drill and retap 7 snapped bolts.
modifie actuator bracket,
modifie the down pipe.
Just been out in it, and it does pull well after 3500 rpm.
as i didn't have my det cans fitted, i set the boost at a safe 15 psi,
Heres boost/rpm for my last 3 turbos fitted, on on the same engine, cam, ignition and fueling.
-RPM = Hy t25=T3stg1 = 2wd T3
2000 = ------ = 05psi = 1.0psi
2500 = 07psi = 16psi = 5.5psi
3000 = 9.5psi = 15psi = 10psi
3500 = 14psi = 15psi = 14psi
4000 = 15psi = 15psi = 15psi
5000 = 15psi = 15psi = 15psi
Also the EGT's have dropped slightly as on the T25 = 1480oF, and 2wd t3 = 1400oF
