wasnt going to take the crank out. someone said a bit of wet and dry to get it nice and smooth, it feels pretty good, should be ok and then get a set of identical bearings. I really cant be arsed to drop the gearbox again to get it all out

Best thing to do, if you have one, use a digital vernier and measure the jurnel (sp) to see if its still in tollerance. this will also let you know what size bearings you got, standard size, etc.
if you are within tollerance, then like you said, wet and dry them smooth, thats what i did, look spot on now. and you cant take to much off with wet and dry as its all harderned.
As for heavy duty bearings, Burtons your place for them

Just showed the bearings to a mechanic and he told me i should get a new crank and ideally rebuild the bottom end. he has put new shells in after sanding and said it lasted 5 mins before it went again. so looks like im going to try and find a new(used) bottom end from ford fair as i cant wait 3 weeks for my mondeo to come off the road and use that for a zvh conversion.

Might be worth getting the crank ground down and put in undersize bearings. Will cost about Ł100 then you've got a good setup and won't have to touch it again.
